I went to rent a car today and was shocked to see that it would cost about 300.00 to rent an SUV for 3 days. For 3 days I think it cost us about 200 in November. And last May, it cost about 180.00 for a week. Does it matter how far in advance you reserve, or is it according to the season?

You might get some good suggestions if you post this on the transportation board. I am sure you will get some good suggestions to cut the cost.

When are you going? That would make a difference.

And why do you need an SUV? What will you be doing with the rental - towing something or hauling a lot of stuff? It would probably be a whole lot cheaper to get a car or van if that would suffice for your needs.

Check out Mousesavers.com for advice for getting discounts on rental cars. We got a minivan for 5 days in February for $135 plus tax.

Also try rentalcodes.com for discount codes for most of the major agencies.

And you would probably get more responses if you posted this in the transportation forum. In fact I bet there are threads there now addressing this very issue!

We just got back last night. Rented a Ford Taurus from Hertz (from Thurs. a.m. until Monday p.m.). Cost $149. We did have a one day free coupon. Think you can do better and would definitely question why the SUV. They kill you on those rentals.
