Car rental or daily taxi rides?

OK, it will be me and DD6. :cool1:

We're staying at CSR (end August) and we'll probably be spending the majority of our time at MK (given our current "interests"). We plan to spend the entire time on property (and will not venture outside WDW during this visit). We don't have any plans for TS resort meals (I just couldn't get my head around eating large meals in August!)

Looks like I can rent a car for 9 days for $170 (includes taxes and fees). That amount (in theory) would "buy me" about 9 taxi rides.

I am currently leaning toward using a combo of WDW transportation and cabs (instead of renting a car).

I would like the "group brain" that comes from the vast pool of DISers to play devil's advocate with my draft approach (will help me make the final decision, b/c I have been waffling a bit...) popcorn::

TIA!

Just my opinion, but if I were spending the majority of time at MK I'd use Disney transpo. The bus will drop you a little ways outside the gate. Otherwise with a car or taxi you will be dropped off at the TTC and have to ferry or monorail over. Then if you really wanted to get to another park faster I'd take a cab.

A lot of people hate the busses, but we like them. It's nice for someone else to drive(and for free on top of it), and we use the time getting there to talk about what we want to do at the park and the ride back to the resort to veg out or talk about our day.

That is a great rate for 9 days!! However, I agree with the previous poster. If you are spending a majority of your time at MK, I would use Disney transportation and cab when necessary.

Are you planning on using the car for anything other than going to/from the parks? If you need groceries for your room, want to head over to Universal, Sea world, outlets or off site Restaurants, then I can fathom spending the money. Otherwise, I'd just stick with the internal Disney buses and an occasional Cab if you need to be somewhere before they start running (which would have to be very very early - We've had buses to ourselves heading over to CM early on ;)).

Our plans this year are just to go to/from the parks and CSR. We are planning some midday breaks, and this is where I was thinking cabs might come in handy if the buses aren't cooperating (realizing that cabs to/from MK would actually be cabs to/from the CR).

I also was thinking of a cab from the Boardwalk area if we happen to make it to Illuminations one night, and a cab ride from CR after our Wishes Pirate boat tour...

Thanks for your advice! (I just keep seeing so many posts about how people can't handle not having a car, and it's nice to see reinforcement for a car-free vacation --> now NEXT year we'll probably add a side trip to Sea World, and in that case I might opt for a car rental...)

Thanks again!!

Where did you find your rental car rate? I'm finally starting to search for something. We always rent a car.

I would seriously reconsider your option of no TS meals for 9 days, especially if the majority of you dining will be at the MK. MK counter service dining is pretty monotonous and while I love the MK there is no way I would spend my entire vacation there.

gumbo1009, thanks (I think) for making me take a look at my own plans.

We have always had a car when staying at a Disney resort either driving from home or renting when flying to Orlando. Before WDW started providing "free" transportation from the airport, it was easy to justify renting a car for our family of 4. Now, its a little more difficult if we aren't going to other parks like Universal Studios or Seaworld or driving to another Disney resort to play tennis, etc.. Our trip in September will be just my wife and I; I had already decided to rent a car (we are flying down) but maybe not...

When we have a car, we can save money on drinks and groceries and occasionally dining offsite; however, when its just two of us these savings aren't as great. We will only be going to WDW parks. If we decide not to rent, I doubt we'll plan to use a taxi at any point either since I'm not looking to dine at another resort.

It would be nice to not worry about putting a dent in a rental car nor refueling when heading back to the airport. This may be a first for us.:scared1:

HA! you made me remember why I stopped renting:

1) ME is free
2) It's nice to let someone else deal with driving & directions.
3) MGM Tram Lines at the end of the day are the worst behaved lines anywhere on earth.
4) That car that took our spot now has a tree on it's roof.

Do you have to have a car at WDW? No, absolutely not. Do you have to rely solely on WDW transportation? No, absolutely not. It just depends on how you want to do things.
Yes, taking a bus means having to wait for the bus to come. But, having a car, especially at MK, means taking a tram (which you may very well have to wait for), waiting for the ferry or monorail to come. It's really a wash for me.
Even during the middle of the day it makes more sense to take the buses. But, that's just me...I have no problems, basically, with Disney transport.

BUT..as someone else has said....you may want to rethink having no TS meals at all. One of the things I always recommend for the hot summer months is at least one sit down meal a day...usually dinner. That way, your body is fueled, you get some needed a/c, and your dd can meet some princesses or other characters. If you don't want to take the time to leave the park then you may want to think about doing a TS lunch.
Just me, but I have to eat anyway. I would rather eat inside, in the a/c and get decent food, than do CS all the time and have to fight for a table.

I went to Priceline -- the downside of this is you don't know what company you're ranting from. I entered $10/day for an economy car and it came back with a response -- but then they tack on a HUGE amount of fees!

I have read many good things about Alamo on the boards (and people are usually kind enough to share discount codes).

I really thought hard about the eating thing. I originally had ADRs lined up each night (when we had been signed up for free dining). But then I realized I would just rather eat a bunch of small meals/snacks than sitting down to big meals in August (that's how we tend to eat in the summer in our family).

We're not commando people (well, *I* could be, but my DD6 is DEFINITELY not), so my plan is that most days we'll be at parks from RD to 2pm or so, and then head back to our resort to swim/hang out -- if DD seems to be OK, some nights we might try to hit a park for another 2 hours, but other nights we'll just stay at the resort. (Sadly, my child operates best if she is in bed for at least 11-12 hours at a stretch.)

We do have a bfast ADR for CRT and a lunch ADR at Tusker, so we won't be going "cold turkey."

We're ordering veggies, hummus and Pita from Garden Grocers, as well as some fruit, cheese, and crackers, so we'll be able to bring some healthy snacks.

I do have a strategy for MK eating -- I see that Columbia Harbor has a veggie-hummus sandwich, and also a good looking tuna sandwich (and my DD loves N.E. Clam Chowder). And I see that the Golden Oak has a veggie flatbread that sounds decent (as well as a "BLT&C" one). Plus the nearby Contempo Cafe does have some decent offerings (and the Sushi Bar in the Poly could also be an option - - I hear they even offer the Kona menu there). And I am actually looking forward to a burger! (I don't eat a lot of burgers, but I do like them and I heard a rumor that Cosmic Ray's has guacamole in the fixins bar!! As well as sauteed mushrooms and onions which makes me happy too!)

While we will find ourselves most days at MK, we will be at AK one day, HS one day, and at Epcot 2 days (so that will help with the variety -- well, except for HS, though I am looking forward to a cupcake there!)

And we're staying at CSR, so if we really/truly want a sit-down meal, it is likely we can go to the restaurant there w/o an ADR (CSR is out of the way and I don't think the restaurant there is very popular, even during free dining).

I really thought long and hard about this -- if we were headed there in the Fall or Winter my guess is I would feel completely different (b/c those times of year we tend to eat full meals). And if we were "commando" people (staying at the park from RD til nighttime) then I would certainly feel differently as well.

But this is why I LOVE the DISers! Because I learn so much, and I thank you for your great advice -- b/c you are both right, if we were going 9am-9pm, we would CERTAINLY need TS breaks!!!

Yay! Can't wait! :cloud9:

We rented a car on our last trip and for the next one we're using Disney transportation and cabs, when necessary. Like you, we'll probably only need one on the night we have to get from POFQ to the Beach Club for our Cape May dinner reservation. Otherwise, we are perfectly happy with the Disney bus system.

Don't forget to factor in gas to your rental car price - at nearly $4/ gallon, it can add up!
