I’m thinking of renting a car for the day , using it from airport to Port Canaveral hotel then over to ship the next morning ,what’s your thoughts on it , has anyone done this and do you have any information about it ? Party of 4 , how was it dropping off the car the day of the cruise ?

this is one of the most often asked questions on this board. Many have done it and many love the idea of renting a car. I, personally have done it at least a dozen times. There are many car rental places within a mile or so from the cruise terminal. Payless, Budget, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Thrifty, Hertz and I am probably forgetting one or more. I know there is a Diser who has a pic map of where they are all located. I recently used Alamo (which is also the location for Enterprise and National). They are literally 5 minutes from the port.

We usually rent at MCO and drop off at the port before the cruise. If it is a short cruise I sometimes keep the car parked at the port and will return it back to MCO. Some rental places charge one way fees, some don't. I always go to www.mousesavers.com and check out their "transportation" page that lists all the rental agencies at WDW, MCO and the port and even has the latest discount codes. It can be time consuming to check each code but many times it is worth it. We also recheck our reservation often as prices change all the time. So far rental companies do not charge anything to cancel and rebook. If you find a better price after you booked a car make sure you book the new reservation with the better price and then cancel your other reservation.

They all have shuttles to bring you back to the port after you drop off the car but many choose to drop luggage and family off at the port and then go return the rental. Reason being it is often easier to fit one person on the rental than dealing with everyone in your party and all their luggage. By dropping luggage off at the port first you don't have to deal with unloading luggage from the car and then loading it on the shuttle. Just food for thought.

That’s what I was thinking , I think it’s $110.00 for a car large enough for 4 adults and 4-5 suitcases

We have found a minivan works well, especially if you don't have 7 adults....while the back of the minivan holds some suitcases, the unused seats work well too.

Keep pricing out. I have found differences up to 60 bucks for MCO to PC. Prices change everyday and some codes really bring down the price.

$110 seems pretty high for a rental from MCO to the port, if your talking about just a one day rental. We fly in 8pm the night before our cruise and plan to drop off rental around noon at the port (considered a one day rental). I first booked it at about $70 and then rebooked it at $48 (total including all fees), that is for a SUV for 4 people and 4 bags. Of course time of year, and other things factor in for sure.

From who did you book it from

We rented from National at MCO 2 days before our cruise (on 21st of March) then will drive it to National near the port on the 23rd and it was a premium car for 4 of us and it was only $110 for the 2 days. Nice thing I didnt see any fee for dropping it off at a different location than pick up which is unheard of for our family.

I went a slightly different route. I rented a car for the whole trip, and am paying to park. It is costing a little more money, but I want a rental car on both ends of the cruise and I didn't want to hassle with dropping off at the rental car and taking the shuttle, and the same when we disembark. This is only a 3 day cruise, so the parking is only $68 and the rental car is about $180, so for the 3 of us that is $250 in transfer costs and we can go eat at Boma after the cruise, and get up and head to the port with hopefully a minimum of hassle.

This thread prompted me to check my rental car reservation and I actually rebooked for $60 less...

Countrymountry where did you rent your car from ?
Alamo, which is what I always use when flying into Orlando. Their drop-off point is also very close to the port (as are most of the other major brand rental companies)
