we will be leaving for Disney the day after xmas and need to rent a car, prob. a minivan or standard suv. When should I book and will it be a fortune???
I would just make sure to rent one now. Last year we had a flat tire over Christmas- put the spare on and then Budget said they will give us another mini van.......then the problem began for them trying to find us one. They did but it took a while for them to find one that was going to be returned that day and my husband had to drive in AWFUL traffic and go to a hotel on International Drive to pick it up. So if you need a mini van or SUV I think they can be in short supply over Christmas. I always find booking as soon as we know is cheaper but other people report great deals closer to trip.
We reserved an SUV through Budget for Christmas week 2012, arriving December 23 and departing December 30. We got a very reasonable rate through Budget using the X474200 Travelocity public code (which unfortunately, I think is now no longer applicable for rentals at MCO) plus a $25 entertainment book coupon. Total with taxes and after the coupon was applied was under $300 for the week.
We booked our rental in July 2012, and never was able to find a deal for Christmas week that could beat it. Like you, we were very specific on the type of vehicle we wanted (either a van or an SUV). We watched weekly (even daily, during the final month before our trip) but this was the best price we could get.
You may want to try the KLM Flying Blue discount through National to see what rates come up. We have an 8-day SUV rental for August that comes to $267 with all taxes and fees (after another entertainment book coupon is used). PLUS it includes a whole whack of extra insurances that a standard rental does not. There's a thread that explains the discount here on the Transportation board.....
