I would like to rent a car the day of my arrival. It would save me time and money to just rent the car after arriving at the airport and return it same day to the airport.

I was originally going to take the DME to my resort after arriving in Orlando, but could I take it at a later time than originally planned? Do I need to call and say something or could I just get on since I did indicate I was arriving that day?

Yes, you can do that. No need to let DME know of any changes in arrival times.

Have you checked the price of simply returning it on property or close by?
I know for my reservation, I can get the same price to drop off locally, rather than having to make a trip back to MCO.

Depending on when you are going and who you are renting from, you may find the price to be the same or at least close enough that it's worth the extra to not have to drive back to Mco.
