As some of you might know we (my DH, DD and DS)are driving to Disneyland from Canada. It's a 26 hour drive and all though we stop at night we really want to minimize our stops during the day (other than for gas and bathroom breaks). Does anyone have any ideas of what we can pack for food on the way there?
It will be for breakfast, lunch and supper.
I'm already planning on sandwiches(I'm sure we'll be sick of them by the time we arrive), fruit, cheese strings, juice boxes.
Any ideas would be really helpful.
TIA :)

How about a salad? Cut up greens and veggies and put in ziploc bags. Bring some cut up cooked chicken and shredded cheese. Toss it all together with some dressing when you are ready to eat. Add some salsa and tortilla chips and make it a taco salad.

Instead of regular sandwiches, how about roll ups. Spread a large tortilla with cream cheese, layer with lunch meat, lettuce, tomato and cheese, roll it up and wrap with plastic wrap or foil.

With what has already been mentioned. I have to disagree with the burritos, and the salads. In my expierence burritos leak, and a salad would require a fork and alot of visual concentration for the driver..just not safe. I do not know the border laws for produce, but if you can bring the carrots and celery along with the string cheese that would be a great snack. My Son thinks bananas are the perfect travel food, as they come in thier own wrapper, and require no refrigeration. I would plan on a small ice chest for drinks (water, milk, juice..), and such. I like the cold pizza idea, and your sandwich idea. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches as well as granola bars for breakfast would be great. Popcorn travels well too.popcorn:: I would also pack a Disney Trivia game and music to get you all in the spirit of Disney. Have a safe trip driving, and a ton of fun at the parks.:tink:

Just a reminder that the US border guard will ask if you are bringing any fruits and vegetables across the border. You may want to stock up on those items after you cross the border.

But don't buy too much once you've entered the US; California border agents will search your car again for fruits and vegetables. The last time I entered California from Nevada, which was several years ago, I noticed that opened bottles of soda and water were also being confiscated.

Cold pizza is always our dinner when we are eatting in the car.

As others have said, no fruits and veggies accross the boarder.
Remember bananas stain, awefully!
But if you stop once in the US--
Apples and peanutbutter is a good healthy, protein filled snack/breakfast.

How about Gogurts.
Dry cereal, granola bars, muffins for breakfast.

Make sandwiches before you leave in the morning

Dinner- cold pizza.
And I love the salad idea, as long as you stop for the driver to eat-- driver can wolf down the food at a rest stop while DS gets to run around strech his legs.

And dont forget some sweets- cookies, rice crispy treats (dont tell but that is what Ihad for breakfast today- homemade- come on it is cereal thats good for me right, and cant have much more sugar than the lucky charms my kids had :thumbsup2 )

Yep, among other things, you can't bring Oranges into California - they'll make you toss it at the State Line.

You can consullt the Calif. Department of Food and Agriculture's list here:

Have not seen this happen in many years, but we travel 97 to I-5.

Yes, forgot about that search at the California border on the I-5. Years ago, when we drove down with our travel trailer, we got searched. We thought we had used up our fruits/veggies and had no more. They found an avocado that happened to have rolled away somewhere and confiscated it. :rotfl: Honest mistake.

One of the things we do when we drive south is to stop in at a Whole Foods. They have a fabulous cooked foods section and microwaves. We make a pit stop and load up on lunch + snacks + bathroom break. The one we usually stop in at is in downtown Portland, near Powell's bookstore. We usually make it there by 11:30am before lunch traffic hits.

The weird thing is when we went in November (2007) we had oranges in our van and we told them about them but they just waived us through. Maybe they are selective on what they take? :confused3

I wouldn't chance it. There are huge signs right at the border that you cannot bring fruits and veggies. Where are you coming from? There are some good grocery stores right across the border...

I really like the pizza idea...at least it's something like supper. I won't stock up on too much fruit (just enough to get through the two days). I saw mini boxes of ceral in the supermarket and I'll buy some of those closer to the daye we go. Wow thanks for all the great ideas guys!
