My parents are (finally) putting my car into my name this April when I turn 19.
I know my insurance will go up (I only have to give them about 100 a month right now to cover me on theirs)

So.. here is my problem.

I got a speeding ticket in October. I was only given the ticket for going less than 9 mph (even tho I was really going 22 over  )
The trooper also put "No points" on it because he said he didn't want my insurance to go up. The magistrate court also told me nothing would show up under my license.

So, how do I make sure? And if there isn't anything there, do I have to tell them that I got a ticket?

*(Them being the insurance companies)*

Some time around January or February go to you local Motor Vehicles/Driver's License Bureau Office (or whatever they call it) and ask for a copy of your record. There may be a $5.00 or so charge to get it. Also it may be possible to get on line, but you will need a credit card for that. It will show all details of your license.

Technically making a false statement to get insurance can lead to the cancellation of the policy.

Sorry to tell you Piecey, no points on your licence does not mean the ticket will not be seen by the insurance agency. The police say this all the time but they are wrong. You have no POINTS against losing your license...You do have what we insurance companies like to call INSURANCE POINTS...and surchargeable ones at that. Untill that ticket is three years old you will be paying a surcharge (Around $300 dollers a year). To boot your insurance policy will be underwritten for 5 years. Since you can not possibly have 5 years full driving experience the ticket will count even more against you as insurance companies will have to multiply your current activity against years of driving experience.........To make a long story short..your screwed. :confused3 ....sorry no other way to put it. Your insurance will be incredibly high for the next 3 years or so...If I were you id keep said car in your parents name and stay on thier insurance...of course when your current company looks at your record your parents insureance will go up.....dont assume they already looked. They will look at your parents policy and your parents policy WILL GO UP when they do.

Sorry for the bad news but next time drive slower....22 mph over the limit is crazy and irresponsible. You are controling a two ton wrecking machine and you dont have alot of experience....Treat your car with respect and drive defensivly...Driving is a privdledge

zip is correct..

being an insurance agent myself, i pull all kinds of things up on people they didn't even know were there.

i will be told if you or anyone in your household as ever driven a particular car and been charged with a ticket during its use.

plus if you have ever had a claim on this car, that will also affect your rates. even if you were not the driver.

good luck

I also work in the insurance field - in NY for over 23 years. -- if the ticket you received is for 9 miles over the posted limit -- example - posted limit is 30 mph - and you got the ticket for 39 mph - than it is a minor moving violation . In New York state - insurance companies DO NOT CHARGE for the first minor violation - they will charge if you have a second one (approx the $ 300 a year extra that ZIP mentioned). I would check with an insurance agent in your home state to find out how they define a speeding ticket.

That said - 22 mph over the limit is just not safe .... you are driving a vehicle that can kill you & others due to a millisecond lapse of judgement. Patience will make you a better driver - over confidence will hurt you. Take a defensive driving class ,you will save money on your insurance and perhaps learn a couple of things. One of the best tips I picked up was when passing a vehicle try to get out of the other drivers blind spot as quickly as possible. Also -- on a 30 mins. trip - driving 10 to 15 mph over the speed limit will get you there 5 mins. faster - than doing the speed limit. Is 5 mins. worth getting into an accident due to speeding ?

A word about accidents - ALL insurance companies share date through an agency called C.L.U.E. - comprehensive liability underwriting exchange. So.. don't bother trying to hide any accidents - it will show up.

Yeah, I had no clue I was going that fast. I was on a rural route where everyone speeds and caught up in a conversation with someone (no excuse, I know) and just not paying attention.

I definitely learned my lesson- I'm a VERY responsible kid, I've had to be.

I got really upset when the whole thing happened and that is why he cut me a break- he said he catches people speeding like that all the time, that the speed limit is only that low because of the wildlife in the area being dangerous at night. (Gotta love rural WV)
He knew I was upset, gave me a ticket (and a stern warning to be more careful) and I've definitely been a LOT more careful because I know I can't afford for anything else like that to happen.

Thanks for all the advice, though. Some of you guys were harder on me than my parents, haha.

The quotes I got were about 200/year cheaper if it was considered a minor moving violation vs. a speeding ticket, so I guess I just need to figure out which WV considers it!

Thanks again for the help and quick replies :)

In North Carolina, your insurance would NOT go up for this ticket. That is one point, and insurance goes up when you get two points. I suspect that is the same case in West Virginia b/c of what the trooper said to you. The increase is approximately 50% on your liability, so it can potentially be larger than the $300 mentioned earlier.

You should be able to find the information for your state by using google. My DH had a leadfoot incident a few months ago, and I was able to find out exactly what would happen if he paid the ticket (i.e., pleaded guilty) on line in an hour or so. I found out that hiring a lawyer and getting the ticket reduced would be much cheaper, and it was.

Sadley for the OP your logic does not hold true for a 18 year old with little driving experience. The Original poster has a ticket with under five yaers experince behind the wheel.

For example) :teacher: 1 year experience behind wheel and 1 speeding ticket in real life = (to the insurance company) 5 speeding tickets in five years driving experience.....Hence the youthful operator is still screwed :confused3 in NC or WV or Mars.

The insurance will be very high. :earseek:

Depending on what you find out, I'd keep your insurance under your parents for three years like Zip said.

When I was 17 I got in an accident (ok, I ran into a car parked horizontally behind me and smashed in the driverside door :earseek: ) and I was under my parents' insurance policy. Since I had only been driving a year (well, maybe at this point, under a year) I was afraid that our rates would go really high. Well, you know what? They didn't BUDGE. The insurance company told us that since we had such a good driving record, they wouldn't raise our rates at all.

I don't know what they would have told me if I had gotten my own insurance within three years of the accident. It was on my record, but I never got charged "insurance points".

If it's wanting to feel more independent and responsible, just pay your parents back for what it costs to get insurance under them. :confused3

DDad is an insurance agent for a major carrier.

I would stay on your parent's policy as LONG as possible!

No, it isn't me.

I'm sorta getting the parental boot from them.

I'd been driving for over a year when I got the ticket- and my parents have an awesome record (Dad's never had a ticket for anything at all. Ever.) So I know my insurance is much lower under them... and I know it's majorally going to go up when I get my own policy.

But, they told me yesterday as of April they're cancelling me (and that I needed to find a new place to live) sooo... oh well

 Sorry about that.

Yeah, I'd say to go to DMV to get your history, then shop around for car insurance.

Sorry I couldn't help more :confused3
