Car Hire for next year for UK holiday

As some of you might know, me and DH are thinking of spending 2 weeks next year going round England, Ireland and Scotland for our holiday (instead of going to WDW at Xmas 06 as we want to start trying for kids next year some time so we thought it was more sensible not to go abroad in case I am preggers and cannot fly).....anyway..........

I was thinking it would be fun to hire a car (maybe a jeep or a convertible) to make the holiday even more fun.

Anyone done this before and did you use a local company or a UK company that cover everywhere (like Easycar.com or someone)?

Got some on line quotes from big companies and it's coming out at about 600-700 for a nicer car, so I was wondering how much it might be for 2 weeks hire of a jeep or convertible.

Any ideas?

I've never actually hired a car myself, but ones I have driven for work have been surprisingly expensive!!
