car hire costs

I think so too.
Taking Dollar's insurance will more than likely double your quote :guilty: .
Have you tried www.bnm.com?
I was over earlier and priced a compact car up for £105 for two weeks - obviously insurance on top will bump up the price.
Also, apparently, www.rentalcodes.com are good.
Found both sites on the transportation board.
Think, if you're still not certain, I'd go along with a site other than Dollar who more readily accept the ins we can buy here :) Think the £105 quote was from EZ cars or something similar.
Add to that between £75 and £103 for alternative annual ins and it saves a fair bit  All they asked, on the site, was that you showed them your ins document at the desk.

Just be a bit careful you are covered if you book with Dollar direct. They gave me a quote which they said was OK for a UK resident as far as insurance went, but when the girl checked with her supervisor only US citizens were eligible. There have been a couple of posts in this thread from US guys giving advice and the situation is not the same for us.

Sorry - just to add in case of confusion - I totally agree doing independent insurance as Alison and several others have described is a great money saving idea and I do this myself. Just make sure you are covered from a UK resident's perspective.

Think i'm going to go with Dollar and take their insurance booking on the UK site paying in £ (just for my own peace of mind as this is the first time we have not gone with the holiday company) Still going to save over £120.00. Take it there are no discount codes to be used on this site. :confused3
Thanks for everyones help, might be back later with even more problems for you to solve. :wave2:
Alison you will soon be an expert on the subject :teacher:

LOL
Can you tell I used to work for CAB? ;)
Well, I had a 'wobble' just before we went in Jan and I picked everyone's brains on DIS before deciding to take a deep breath and go with my original decision ;)
Interesting that Dollar is cheaper if you book a package - they really are cheeky :sad2:
Try mousesavers as I thought I saw a discount code for Dollar. It might have expired though,
Have fun.

JUST TO THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP.

We have now booked our car for our holiday with usrentacar.

We have a 4 dr intermedite for 2 weeks for £234.00 saving us £130.00 (we are also getting a bigger car than with the tour company) :cool1:

We have been three times before and always took the "free car" and paid insurance, we will let you know how we get on.
:moped:

Just had to post we got a great deal today with Airline network - they have a special deal at the moment book a full size 4 door and you get a free upgrade to a 7 seater minivan. So I booked 3 weeks in August including platinum upgrade (full tank of petrol and another driver) for a total price of £424 now bearing in mind last August I had a 7 seater minivan with no upgrade and that cost me £632 again booked with airline network. :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: Thought that this was a fantastic deal!!!!

On First Choice site am looking at booking 2 wks Sept with car/no ins. A sign popped up telling me I'd still have to pay for LDW/SLI/fees+taxes at the airport upon collection of car. I'm a Natwest CC holder so I was hoping to save by using their car insurance.
Anyone have an idea of what these charges would be? First Choice insurance is £334.

:flower: Ok, we were in Orlando for 19 days Jan/Feb 2005.
The costs at the airport were around £55 in total - still way cheaper than taking their insurance ;-)
Hope this helps.
:cheer2:

We just got the Nationwide credit card statement for our recent trip (12 nights), and the Dollar charge came to $74.21 or £38.91 thanks to a 1.90 exchange rate at the time. We used the policy from Insurance4Carhire and the agent at the Dollar desk didn't give it a second look.

Thanks for all your information.
I have cancelled the whole package with Direct and I am going to book a car and insurance package with a rental firm direct in Florida. Hoping to save at least £100.00
:cool1:
You might want to give airlinenetwork a call they are offering a great dealon car hire in Orlando. We have got a 7 seater van for 15days for £369 inc the platinum insurance everything in. They were very confident that no one would beat their offer and they were right. Believe me I tried.

Hi

Just got back.

Booked with usrentacar and saved over £100 with a car two sizes bigger.

Had no problems at all.
