Car hire at miami airport

Does anyone have any tips for car hire from Miami Airport?

Looking for a good price and a rental company in close proximity to airport.

I hate the Miami Airport. It's on my "avoid at all cost" list--but there's a shuttle that takes you offsite for the major car agencies. There's a few off site smaller companies with good rates--but it's a real pain to return the rental car sometimes and one has to be conscious of the part of town in which you are wandering.

Are you flying into Miami and driving to WDW? If so, you may want to try Ft. Lauderdale Airport. It's a much easier to navigate place and getting a rental car is a snap. I have an elderly relative in Miami who I visit several times a year (no relatives live in Florida but her) and I always fly into Ft. L because of the ease. And it's a quick drive down I-95 to Miami.

DH and I have used Alamo, Dollar and Budget at Miami. Budget was the worst experience by a slim margin (overcharged but later sorted out by usrentacar for us), but there was little noticeable difference in accessing the depots to pick up/drop off the cars.

Some of the booking websites state that Dollar are on site at the airport - don't believe it. Yes, they have a rental desk for the paperwork on site, but the cars are still off site.

We have only been to Miami once and are flying there again this year, flight deal was too good to turn up. We used Alamo last time and are again this time as DH gets a discount for working for BAA. The only problem that we found was getting on the bus at the airport, it was a bit of a free for all, and they were packed. As i am the only driver this year we have almost decided that if the first bus is really packed then I will try to get on alone with my hand luggage, and the 3 boys will follow with the suitcases on the next, this way I can get in the queue and we will be away a bit quicker.
