Car drop off at resort

Is there any reason that we couldn't do this...my parents are going to lend us their car for the second half of our stay. They would drop off the car but likely couldn't do so until after we leave for a day at the park. Can I "register" the car with POFQ when we check in (2 days prior) and leave a parking pass at the front desk for them to put in the car when they drop it off? Or can they register it for us when they drop it off?

They are not staying at the resort, they are just lending us use of their car while we are there for part of the trip.

You can certainly do this. My normal instinct would be to register the vehicle at check-in, as I wouldn't think that WDW would allow someone else to register a vehicle in your name and it would save you a desk visit later.
Are you not planning on meeting up with them that day?

Oh yes, we are planning to meet up with them at Epcot later in the day but they don't want to pay to park 2 cars at Epcot unnecessarily (we are using Disney transport and they are just going home afterward) so they thought the better option was to drop it at the resort on the way in.

I figured we would have to register it at check-in but just thought I'd see if this was the case. Thanks!

1) At Disney, you do not "register" a car.
2) You just put a parking pass in the window.
3) In your case, ask at check-in for a parking pass.
. . . have the CM put it in an envelope for your folks
. . . they will keep it at the Front Desk under their name
. . . the folks go to guard shack and say they are leaving the car
. . . they say the parking pass is waiting at thr Front Desk
. . . they go to the Front desk and ask for the pass
. . . they can leave their keys for you with Front Desk
. . . then they can put the pass in the car window
