We are seriously considering staying at OKW in Feb 2006. We went to the DVC board and found alot available. Regardless, I have read mixed reviews about the location and if we would need a car. My 3 young children will be coming and I really don't want to rent a car if I don't have to. Any thoughts?

Even tho I am a major control freak, it is my husband who thinks we have to have a car at Disney! But I have to say that, the last time we stayed at OKW without a car, it was REALLY relaxing. You know how it is...if you HAVE a car as handy as your car will be if you stay ot OKW (right at your front door!) it's easy to get dependent on it. I have not decided for my next stay at OKW whether to rent a car or not...if i were only doing parks with my family I would not even think about it but I am going with a group of 9 women :bride: and we will probably have two meals at other resort hotels and imagine that the cab fares for a big group might equal 3day minivan rental (especially if I also add in a trip to the grocery store and one to Millenium Mall ;) ) Also want to try Magical Express and that will be a good option for my friends as we are all coming in on different flights. I am leaning towards renting once I actually get to OKW instead of from airport. BTW, the last time we stayed ot OKW without a car and asked the front desk to call a cab to take us to airport on departure day, the guy said, "Oh, just hop in this van and I will take you!!!" So, how's that for service? Even with a huge tip for him, we saved $$$!!!! And time! (no small feat at WDW!!!!)

We stayed at OKW this past March. We did have a car since we were on a 2 week vacation and had gone to other areas in Florida. Even though we had a car we didn't use it while at OKW. Normally we never rent a car not having to drive is part of the vacation to me. We had no problems with the busses. The only thing I didn't like about OKW was that it seemed everyone had cars and used them. The buildings and grounds were very nice but I didn't get that total vacation feeling since there always cars on the road. We have stayed in moderate, deluxe and DVC this was the only place I felt this way. At the other resorts you hardly see a car while waiting for a bus. Even when walking around the resort constant cars. While we had hardly any waits for busses I think most that stay there like to have and use a car.

We've been DVC members since 1992 (at OKW) and have only rented a car once - when we had a family reunion, were staying at a GV and needed to purchase more food than was available and reasonably priced on-site. Also, some extended family members wanted to visit Universal and the outlets. Not having a car is a vacation for us.
