Captain EO?

Seriously, who is forcing you to see it? That's something else I really don't get about the Captain EO discussions that come up here. If you really hate MJ that much, then don't freaking see the movie! Not difficult. It's not even right up in your face when you get into Future World; you have to go a bit out of the main path to get to it.
I really don't understand the hate here. Look on pretty much any other Disney discussion site: most people either like Captain EO or they just leave it alone. The only reason people here slam it so much is because they hate MJ, as clearly demonstrated by jthelman's posts.
I'm headed to Disneyland in about a week, and I fully intend to see EO as many times as I have time for while I'm there, in addition to buying any merchandise they may sell that I don't already have. I'm a long-time EO fan and collector. Deal with that, haters.

I saw it years ago when it first came out. Didn't care for it. Saw it again last year just to see if maybe my tastes had changed. They haven't. I won't watch it again - no one will force me. I will not be sad to see it go and something else take it's place. I didn't say anything about MJ in my post. But now I will. His acting abilities were very limited in my opinion. The puppets were laughable. And the storyline did not flow in my opinion. I (obviously not everyone) don't understand why Disney would re-use this movie. I agree with a couple of other posters that I would have thought Disney would have created a new movie.

Not hating! Just my $0.02. I think voicing an opinion is still allowed. :flower3:

And PS: How do you like this shih tzu!!

This is unfair.

If you don't like Captain EO, you are just full of hate.

Seriously?

Do you also believe that people who don't like SGE are also "haters"? People who don't like the Norway movie hate Norwegians?

I like some of Michael Jackson's music a lot. The guy himself was creepy-weird at best, but I like the songs. I can't stand Captain EO.

I don't like Mel Gibson. I still think his movies are some of the best ever made.

It's totally possible to think EO sucks and not be a "hater."

Got it.

No more debates about attractions anymore. All of them are great and no one is to dislike or question anything.

Sorry about the exercise, I will find a less indoctrinated place for discussion.

There's a difference between discussing an attraction and the personal lives of actors or musicians that appear in them. I don't like the attraction, but I'm able to separate that from my thoughts and feelings on MJ, which in my opinion have no bearing here.

It is definitely possible; it's just not what I've seen on this board. Almost every EO discussion that's ever happened on this board involves people slamming Michael himself and not making any real comments about the film.
The difference is that when people discuss SGE, they actually have comments about the ride itself; it's not a bunch of people saying "I hate Stitch, therefore Disney shouldn't have this ride." Likewise, people don't cite Norwegians as a reason for not liking the Norway film. However, when it comes to EO, it seems like all people can say is stuff like "MJ is in it, that's not appropriate, he should stay in the 80s, he creeps me out," etc. Most people on here never have anything to say about the film itself, and in fact, there have been a few people (not in this thread, but in past ones) who have said they would like it, but won't see it unless they remake it with Janet Jackson, Prince, or any other celebrity. Stuff like that is what makes the difference in my mind.

Does anyone have any idea how much longer it will be playing? DW and I go in December and it would be fun to watch something as ... unique :confused3... as Capt EO

They haven't announced an end date, so I would expect it to still be there when you go in December.
Despite what people say here, I would definitely recommend giving it a chance yourself instead of skipping it just because some on here will tell you to. It's a lot better than people make it out to be.

You do understand that MJ was arrested and went to trial - right? At best he had questionable judgement when it came to kids. This point can't be argued.

Try this as a litmus test: would you have let him anywhere near your kids?

You still never answered why Disney wouldn't just pick someone else (anyone else) rather than MJ.

Can anyone confirm that there are more people attending Captain EO than HISTA? My best is that the same number of crickets for either crappy film.

So, being arrested and going to trial means you're guilty? Why do we even bother with trials, then? Any time someone is accused we ought to just toss 'em in prison right away. After all, people never, ever lie about rape because they think they might get money out of it, right? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18266118

For what it's worth, Michael was accused of being sexually inappropriate with three adolescent boys. He was never charged with anything with the first and was found Not Guilty with the second. The third was settled out of court.

I wouldn't leave my children alone with anyone who had a history of drug and alcohol problems. I think Michael was a psychologically damaged man, most likely due to childhood abuse. I would still, however, have absolutely allowed my children to work with him on a music or film project.

Disney picked MJ because he had just died, he was all over the news and millions of people around the world were mourning him, and they had this old film in their vaults. It cost them nothing to put it up, and it was timely and relevant. As I said, Disney's all about the nostalgia... and the profit.

Disney has essentially unlimited resources to produce a film, or find one of 100s if not 1000s in their vaults. Why EO is just an amazing decision to me. There's two possibilities: Disney execs are incredibly lazy and took the easy way out, or they are just cheap as hell (maybe both).

I saw it years ago when it first came out. Didn't care for it. Saw it again last year just to see if maybe my tastes had changed. They haven't. I won't watch it again - no one will force me. So folks from both sides of this argument seem to agree. Forget MJ's personal life. Disney saw a very cheap way to replace an underperforming attraction with another underperforming attraction and capitalize on all of the media attention surrounding his death (at little cost). It was a cheap move that I think was beneath them.

See it or don't see it. Like it or don't. If you haven't seen it before then by all means see it and form your own opinion. Personally, I can't wait to see it replaced with something of better quality.

I have not seen this, so I have no opinion one way or the other. However, after reading a post back in this thread that mentioned a "Big Blue Hologram Head", it almost makes me want to see it this time around. Sounds bizarre!

Yes indeed, that's Commander Bog, played by Dick Shawn. In the pre-show, you can see him having fake eyebrows with star-shaped glitter in the hair attached to his face. It's crazy and fantastic. There's one part of the movie where the other characters have had enough of listening to him, so Hooter (the greenish elephant with holes in his trunk like a flute) throws a cream-filled doughnut at him. It's absolutely wonderful.

Look. I sat waiting for the very first run of "Thriller" on MTV. For hours. "Thriller" was a great album and I had a lot of respect for MJ up until he went off the rails. I was/am a child of the 80s.

Did/do I hate MJ? Nope.

Do I think that celebrating any aspect of his life is a good thing at Disney? Nope. He was a hot mess and what he became overshadowed what he once was. (The Mel Gibson thing is a good analogy, IMO.)

Is anyone forcing me to see it? Nope. But that doesn't stop me wanting something else in the spot.

And you got an "A" on your paper. Really? Like that makes your conclusions correct? I could easily write a paper that supported the opposing points and get an "A." That doesn't make either of us correct.

If Disney is going to bring back things from the 80s and 90s to Epcot (seems to be the exact opposite of Epcot's original theme, but oh well), could we possibly look into it being Horizons and the Wonders of Life Pavilion? And maybe bringing back Walter Cronkite or Jeremy Irons for Spaceship Earth? Nothing against Captain EO - it is my third favorite 3D movie at Disney World - but there are other things I would like to have brought back more.

I would definitely vote for The Wonders of Life. I really enjoyed that place and thought there were lots of neat things to do in there. Didn't they have a (fairly) healthy CS in there, too?

No, it doesn't necessarily make my conclusions correct. I just put that out there to show that some people do get a great deal out of Captain EO, and that people who do aren't stupid.

ETA: this isn't to say that people who dislike EO are stupid. It just seems like a lot of people here like to insult the intelligence of EO and MJ fans.

I believe you are correct. I just loved Cranium Command. Yes, it is horribly dated (the boy in there actually played a classmate of DJ's on Full House when she was either in upper elementary or lower middle school), but it was just so darn cute. And yes, Hans and Franz would be lost on some, but still - LOVE IT!

I don't recall ever SEEING cranium command, but I've listened to it a hundred times on live365.com and would love to see it once (or twice) so I could form an opinion.

Insulting the intelligence behind a show, EO, and MJ's fans are two vastly different things.

Honestly if you guys hate the show much and want it gone, let Guest Relations know. Stop by if you're in the park sometime and tell someone (respectfully) about the show, or email them and say it (respectfully). Enough of those emails and it will justify management more to find a replacement quicker.

Wow, I just wanted to know if Cpt. EO was going to be around this summer. Never expected such a discussion!:scared1:

We never saw it the first time around. Maybe we'll give it a shot just to see where we stand on the whole debate.:rotfl:

I said it, but the point is how boring and dumb it is.

Although I think people should do stuff and make up their own minds, I also think they should do the better stuff first and make up their own minds about that, lol.

If you aren't limited on time, by all means, go see EO and find out how bad it is. But if you have to eliminate things, start with Stitch, the movie in Norway and EO.
