Capacity At Parks

Hi all,

We were in Disney from the 26th to the 2nd. Yes, it was crowded, but we LOVE Disneyworld, so a gazillion people couldn't dampen our spirits a bit. We had a great time.

My question is could someone please share with me the actual capacity numbers for each park. We were told that some or all of the parks reached "capacity" at some point during our stay. I'm a scrapbooker, and I'd like to include that number in my scrapbooks for the kids. I heard on Saturday the 26th, when we were told they closed MK due to "capacity" that the number was 50,000, but then I read on one of the "fact" sites that MK could hold 100,000. So, thanks, to anyone who might be able to help me out.

This is probably no help at all, but maybe there is a difference between a practical capacity and a physical capacity?

There are different capacity numbers. One is the number of people who are in the park at one time. That is, "at 2:03pm, X number of people are in the park."

Another reading is for how many people can visit the park over a day. Or, "On December 24, Y number of people were in the park during that day." The daily number will obviously be higher than the minute-by-minute number, and it basically counts gateclicks.

A final capacity reading can be made for specific time spans, as in, "Between 2pm and 3pm on a given day, Z number of people were in the park." That number will be an average, but it shows guest flow -- whether the people entering the park is equal to, larger than or smaller than the number of people leaving the park.

That could account for the discrepancies between numbers.

Capacity properly refers to the number of people who can be in the park at any given moment, it may vary slightly for reasons I don't know.

Traffic is a better term for the number of people who may be admitted over the course of the day, not all of them necessarily being in the park at any given time. As well as the number of cars entering the toll plaza over the course of a day or an hour etc.

I counted 29 rides and enclosed attractions (including Tomorroland Transit and Tiki Birds) at Magic Kingdom and estimated that the average capacity was 2,200 per hour each (some more, some like Dumbo much less). I estimated that the total ride capacity was about 64,000 guests per hour which means that if there were 64,000 people in the park, on average each person could go on one ride in that hour.

64K is a pretty good guess. Historically, when the parking lot fills up, all additional traffic is turned around at the toll plaza with some spaces left for those with tickets. Now, with so many staying on the property, it is not so simple. The record attendance for an entire day is around 92K for MK. Anything over 60K in the park at one time offers challenges, so 50-55K is the manageable number for MK. With three other parks to divert traffic to there is an strong effort not to overload

Park capacity varies with the number and size of attractions open, the capacity of buildings, walkable area in the park, etc.

MK can not hold 100k. I can't say what actual capacity is, but it's less than 100k.

MK definitely can't hold 100K at one time, but they could have 100K going through on any given day. If all you're counting is gateclicks, then 100K is high, but possible. Just depends on what you're counting.

I really don't think you will ever find out the number! LOL We were on the backstage magic tour on Dec. 28th and asked our tour guide that very same question. He said that Disney won't realease those numbers. Actually, it is a secret!! So, We didn't ask that ques. again. LOL

We were in the World Dec 17 -23. I was told be a monrail worker at the Compteporary that the MK would reach capacity during Christmas and New Year Weeks. Capacity is 80,000 in MK. Can you believe that.

We were also on the backstage tour and were also told Disney does not release those numbers and those numbers have to do with fire codes. Those numbers also have to include cast menbers not just visitors. The Magic Kindom was the only park to close this hoilday season and It was for 2 hours only on 1 day.

This was taken from the headlines section on the main Dis page. You could use some of the quotes in your scrapbook..the 33 yr history etc.

A couple headlines before this was the terror alert possibly hurting attendance...NOT!! They can't keep us from our happy place!!!

"Record attendance sends Disney stock soaring

News of record attendance during the Christmas holidays at Walt Disney World sent Walt Disney Co. stock to a 52-week high on Tuesday.

Disney Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner told investors Disney World posted the best single day for attendance and the best single week for attendance in its 33-year history over the holidays.

As usual, the company did not disclose a specific number, but Eisner said more than 200,000 people a day were at Walt Disney World.

That wasn't the only good news Eisner offered up -- he also reaffirmed the company's fiscal year earnings growth target of 30 percent -- or more.

Shares hit $24.27 before falling back slightly. After dipping below its previous 52-week closing high of $24.20, shares in Disney (NYSE: DIS) closed at $24.20, up six cents or .25 percent."
