Can't use points to stay at Grand Californian Hotel?

When talking to my guide this past week while we were going over the contracts and stuff, we came across this sheet describing the point schedule if you would like to use your points to stay at other Disneyland Hotels. I asked her where the column is for the Grand Californian Hotel, and she said that they no longer allow people to use their points to stay at the hotel. I swear I read about others using their points to stay at GCH. Did they recently remove this option?

Once a location has a dedicated DVC part you can no longer use your points for the hotel part. This happened recently with the Contemporary when BLT opened. Same is true at the Boardwalk Inn and the Beach Club.

And WL.

Same thing happens to me every time I try to use our Disney Animal Kingdom Villas points to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

The Cast Member starts to explain that I can't use my points at the Lodge any more. I always break into "Sorry I'm aware of that, I'm trying to book a stay at the Villas." I suppose I'm the only DVC person that refers to the Animal Kingdom Lodge as the Lodge when they mean the Villas.

To be honest I'm getting tired of them correcting me. I still call Epcot, EPCOT Center a lot of times (I even still love wearing my throwback apparel.) And I know a lot of people that still call Disney's Hollywood Studios, MGM.

I would just word my request a bit differently, then you will not have to hear the correction. Perhaps something like "I am seeking a reservation at the Villas at AKL..." would make it more clear that you are seeking a villa accommodation there and not a regular room. Oh and I still call Disney Hollywood Studios "MGM" from time to time myself, lol! :)

I think you missed the point. We own at Animal Kingdom, WHY would you even try to use points to book a hotel/resort stay? It doesn't even make sense.

Not necessarily. Some people like the regular "Hotel Experience." There are always people here on the boards wanting to use points in the hotel section of BW or WL.

Maybe you want a room with 2 queen beds or a room with bunkbeds.

They have to correct you. If you say you want Animal Kingdom Lodge, they can't just assume you mean the villas.

Really? okay weird...

Doesn't mean I 'm going to stop going to EPCOT Center :)

The last date you could stay on points at GCH was 12-31-09.

Ok thanks! I thought I was imagining things... Strange that they won't let you use points for hotels that have a DVC counterpart. I mean, if you want the "Hotel" experience then why can't they allow us that option, if we are willing to pay the premium in points?

The sad thing is, not only can you not book a room at the GCH, but you can no longer book a concierge room at either of the other two DLR hotels (PP & DLH). I used to love staying concierge on points, especially if you have points to burn. Not sure if the no concierge policy is the same at the WDW hotels.

Can you make a cash ressie for the Villas? How does that work I can find nothing on the weban rent points from a friend but would like more security.

Thank you

Jack

Yes, you can reserve a villa through Disney Reservation Center for cash.
