can't reallocate banked points?

I have a december reservation using current UY points and a few banked. It's a sold out resort. I just made a reservation in August using current UY points and borrowed 2 points from my 2026 UY. Then I contacted member services to move those few banked points to the new reservation since I'm still unsure if we're keep the December trip. MS said they couldn't reallocate the banked points without cancelling, which means I'd lose it completely. Is this right? They can't just move them behind the scenes?

Alternatively, I was wondering if there was a way, if I could modify my december reservation to use ONLY current UY points, freeing up those few banked? Does it let you choose which points you use IF they're available? I could drop a night off my August reservation to free up enough points to modify, then book it again since it's not a sold out night.

If points are tied up in a reservation, they can not be moved to another one because they are being used to hold that room.

The system also is set up to use restrictive points first so it can’t take current UY points and leave banked points unless they are part of different contracts within the same membership.

For example, if I want to leave banked RIV points and use just SSR points, I can do that by not choosing the RIV contract when booking. But, I can’t choose current RiV and leave banked RIV if that was my only contract.

Unfortunately, without a cancel of your December trip, those banked points are stuck there.

Is there any way for me to avoid this in the future? Or is this always the case if I book something speculative far in advance?

I don't know if this is by design or by stupidity that Disney doesn't let you move points around existing reservations or just use up the banked points first as each reservation is checked in. :(

It does use banked and borrowed points first when booking a reservation.

I’ve experienced the same situation. I banked points sand made a reservation using them at the 11 month mark. I then decided to add a trip in the near future. I wanted to move those banked points from the trip further out to the more current one. MS told me that I’d need to cancel the entire booking of the further out trip.

Banked points need to be free to use them. Not sure if that is by design or system restraints.

You could:
1. make a reservation using the banked /borrowed points
2. make your other reservation with non banked/borrowed points.
3. If it turned out you weren't able to use the banked/borrowed point reservation, you could
cancel the banked/borrowed reservation and reallocate the points to the non banked/borrowed reservation. (You can actually do this yourself without member services help).

Note: if the reservations were made with the home resort booking priority, this assumes all the points were home resort points.

I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work. Maybe I'm wrong, but you don't HAVE to use banked points, so, assuming you have enough points, there's no reason you couldn't modify the original res to use other points, and then use the banked points for the new res. Right?

@Sandisw above said the system won't let you chose. It always uses the restricted points first.

If the points are all in the same contract, the system requires the most restricted points to be used first.

So, if I want to use my RIV contract and some are banked and some are not, the system will use banked first. You don’t get to choose.

The only way you don’t have to use banked points is if they are in a different contract.

Lets say I am making a 7 month booking and have an SSR and RIV contract. I can choose to only use SSR…and not check RIv…and my banked RIV will remain.

But as soon as I chose to use both SSR and RIV, banked points get taken from both before going back and taking current UY points in the order I have checked the contracts.

The system uses the most restricted points first so that owners don't inadvertantly leave those restricted points unused (by forgetting they have them) and then lose them. Unfortunately, that might be a more common scenario - not all owners are as informed and aware about using points as the ones here.
