Many of you here on the DIS supported and listened to me during the months that our son was deployed to Iraq during the beginning of the war. You adopted members of his Marine unit, sent care packages and letters of support. Thankfully, all members of that unit returned home safely in the summer of 2003. A few months ago, this unit returned to Iraq for a second deployment. Last weekend, a 23 year old Corporal was killed my sniper fire while doing construction work on a rooftop in Baghdad. His body was returned home on Thursday and over the weekend we dealt with the heartbreaking visitation and funeral of a young Marine.

I know that many of you are still being touched by this situation in Iraq on a daily basis and I continue to keep all of you in my prayers. Please remember this fine young man and his family as you pray for peace in the world.

Even though I've seen heartbreaking photos over the past three years, when it hits home and touches the lives of people you know, it's even harder to accept.

The heartbreak on the faces (I'm guessing his parents) says it all.

I'm so sorry. :sad1:

I have tears in my eyes just looking at the pictures. Prayers go out to his family. I hope all the military comes home safely. :grouphug:

I am sitting here crying... the pain on their faces is unbearable... :sad2: I will be praying for all of you.

My prayers are with this family and with all those that are serving to keep us safe. The Lord bless them and their families!

I'm so very, very sorry. Our prayers go out for this fallen hero and his family. God bless his family and all those who grieve for him.

My son explained some of the tradition/respect to the fallen Marine....when his body left Iraq, it was accompanied by another Marine to Dover Air Force Base. At that time, a Marine from this home unit flew to Dover to accompany the body home. At the visitation, two Marines stood at Parade Rest at the head and the foot of the casket. As my son explained to me, "he was never left alone."

The tradition alone is enough to bring me to tears.

That is just heart-wrenching. My prayers are with this family as they grieve their only son. May the Lord hold them in His hand and give them the comfort and peace they need to make it through this. My prayers are also with all the brave men and women serving us today.

I have no words but when a young person is taken from us I think of this poem.

"The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high...

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose...

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man...

And round that early-laureled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's."

A. E. Housman

If another human's death diminishes us, the death of a young man or woman devastates us. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family and all who serve.
