I went to get the DS trial so I could upgrade my firmware - little bug had 1.0 and E had 2.0 and I needed at least 1.1 or 2.1. The stupid DS upgraded my firmware to 1.32 and 2.32.

I can't even use the SCAL if I bought it.


They sent me a different DS to try, but I'm running VISTA 64-bit and it won't work on my laptop.


I think I officially strongly dislike Provo Craft.

I have firmware version 2.32 with my expression, running on Windows Vista 64-bit and have no issues using SCAL. You can download a free trial of SCAL just to a make sure you don't have any issues. I love SCAL but I still purchase an occasional cartridge.

As for the LAB issue - I will agree that the MB over there is getting quite heated. I personally love this cartridge so far, and got it for all the stuff I can cut, not just a row of word titles. I can actually create that last row of titles - just not welded - as all the images are in the cartridge. Yes, it is a pain in the butt, but they can still be cut. (except for the lower case "f" which for some reason is also missing on this cartridge). I would love to have the last row of word titles but I will still love this cartridge without it.

The lowercase f looks like the uppercase without the extra overage to the left on the top and middle.


The trial version worked with my Expression. I cut out DAD in lots of little pieces. They sure do make sure you can use what you cut.

I'll be buying the SCAL instead of the carts on sale at JoAnn's.

EASY!!!! No tutorial?

Type the letters, click on the weld button. You need to move the letters so they overlap - -click on the letter you want to move, you should have a red box with arrows around the letters. Play around so that you understand which each arrow does. Some of them simply move the letter, some stretch the letter. Move each letter in place, hit the preview button to see if you how it will cut. Save this. Do not close it.

To create a shadow. Click on the word so that you have a box around the whole word. In the tool box you'll see the word Normal -- click on the scroll arrow and you'll find other choices -- shadow, shadow black out etc, click it and presto! shadow! Do not change the shadow or it won't macth your word. Save this with a different name.

You can easily copy and paste. Also, watch out for the orientation -- just look for the arrow on the mat on the screen and look at where your arrow on your actual mat is. Haard to explain, easy in person.

Yup, I see that now. Just wish it looked more like a lower case, it is quite similar to the uppercase. Thanks for pointing that out, it would have drove me crazy

Just like 123SA said - it couldn't be easier.

Once you start playing with it, you will wonder how you ever lived without it.

With the current discount code out there SCAL costs just a tad more than what I paid for LAB. In retrospect, considering how much I love it and how much I've used it - I probably would've considered twice that price a good value.

Hmm..I didn't realize it had a tutorial. NEE is more experienced than me, so she may have a better answer. In the meantime, no. I think clicking the weld button simply tells scal that lines that overlay or touch should be joined together - -if you forget to click weld, it will cut the letters separately even though they look welded. As far as I know, you have to manually move each letter like I explained in a previous post. You can use the nudge button, but I think they are a pain.

Because the nature of the font is that the letters are already touching each other. For a print-type font, you need to manually move the letters to get to get them to touch. Then the weld command functions exactly as 123SA describes.

If I have a Mac do I need to have the CDS software for the SCAL to work? I know CDS doesn't work on Macs, so what do I need?

Unfortunately, you need the use of a PC. I know people have used a friend's computer, a laptop, or a work computer but there is no way around it. You just need to update the firmware using the CDS on a PC, then once you connect your Cricut to your Mac with SCAL on it, it will work fine after that.

When you want to weld letters in Design Studio, it's either before or after you click weld, can't remember which, adjust the "kerning" . As little as 0.01 moves the letters closer together. Too much kerning, and they'll be stacked.

You do not have to move them by hand if they are all typed in one box - ie [mother] instead of [m][o][t][h][e][r]

ok i have a completly stupid ? so bear with me.....

with scal you don't buy the carts anymore?? and is it something you buy on the computer and it just remains on the computer and you hook the computer up to your cricut?? what if you get a new computer do you have to transfer it over to the new one???
