It's quite possible they would pop, not only soaking your luggage but those around it. I wouldn't take the chance. I would just buy it when you get down there. Hess Gas stations are very reasonable for soda (sorry, pop).
Please do not put soda, water or any other liquid of large quantities in your checked luggage, the risks of it breaking are too high and you will not cause just damage to your luggage but your fellow passengers as well.
The biggest reason for soda pop cans' popping is physical mishandling of the suitcase during loading and unloading. The pull tab is a very likely place where the can cracks open.
They often are, but not to sea level or its equivalent. Cabins and luggage holds are pressurized to a level somewhere between 6,000 and 8,000 ft. typically. The decreased pressure can make lots of things pop... like ears!
I usually put cans in a zip lock bag in case mis-handling causes a leak. I have traveled many times with drink cans in my luggage (with and without zip-lock protection) and have never had a leak or breakage.
Cans do not pop open at 8,000 feet. Cans are in the cabin for passenger service and the luggage holds are pressurized the same as the cabin.

All baggage compartments are 100% pressurized. Any commercial plane that flies over 10,000 feet is completely pressurized. But you're right, still don't bring the pop/soda. Is it really that much of a money saver anyway?
I had brought with me juice boxes when my kids were younger. When I open the suitcase they were huge. Blown up like a ballon. I never packed them again. I'm so glad they didn't break.
For me, its a matter of convenience. It depends on where I'm going, what time I'm arriving, and whether my favorite drink will be available when I wake up the next morning.
When flying to WDW, we always rent a car so we make a grocery stop and there is no need for packing a couple of drinks. If flying to Europe or other destinations where its not likely that I'll get to a store before I need my drink, I'll pack a couple.
Talked to a flight attendant recently who told me a story of an entire wedding party and family that was travelling across the country for the wedding. An uncle of the bride decided to pack a bottle of red wine in his checked luggage for a special toast at the wedding. Of course the bottle broke and dumped red wine all over the luggage hold ruining everything including the bride's wedding dress in the process.
