What is the opinon of the local canon shooters when it comes to the 40D? is it a good camera? would you pick one up if you wanted to run multiple systems? any comments I know there are more Canon shooters here than Pentax so figured I would ask here

I'm a Canon user- I have the Canon XSi. I'm planning on getting the 50D or equivalent eventually but would rather put money into more (and better) glass right now.

The 40D is discontinued now but it is known as a good camera. The 50D is it's replacement but I'm sure you can find 40D's somewhere. Last I looked they only had used ones on B&H.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a 40D. It is a reliable camera, great hand feel. It is a workhorse. I primarily shoot with an XT and an XTi, but have access to a 40D.

I currently have a full camera system through Pentax as you can see from my signature and was thinking of picking up the 40D as a backup travel camera or as my I feel like shooting with something diffrent today camera as well

I can't see the logic in splitting your resources between two systems unless it was something like having a p&s and a DSLR or a DSLR and a medium format system. The D40 isn't sufficiently different from the K100/K200 to make it worth the headaches of dealing with two incompatible systems. If you want a new camera, why not just upgrade to a K7 or whatever the new high-end Pentax is?

Or the K-x. I believe it will be a little smaller than your K200D, but does give up the waterproofing and extra LCD. It will give you more "horsepower" though. Plus, you get to pick red, white, blue, or black! If it were me, I would get the red and paint two yellow buttons on it!

Actually I split two systems between a Canon 40D and a Nikon D200. I think when one systems offers something the other does not, why let the camera body get in the way. I know, learning two systems is a pain but what else do camera geeks have to do other than shoot. Really ends the which system is better, blah, blah, bah debate when you own them both.

For the price, a 40D is a good, solid camera. Does not give you the micro focus adjustment like the 50D and the mega pixels but it has fast focus and FPS. I like mine.

I would ask you why go outside of your current system like Mark commented. For a back-up, I would not suggest it. If Canon gives you something the Pentax does not, then it makes sense. For me, I like the selection of telephotos Canon offered for the price point. I liked the 100-400 IS and got the 40D for that reason.

I think Mark is a little confused - he's thinking of the D40, not the 40D. (Darn it, Canikon, keep your names a little more different!) The 40D is more comparable to the K10D/K20D.

Still, I guess I'd also wonder why a 40D body - unless you're going to get an M42 adapter and use your current lenses, you're looking at getting a pile of new lenses, and IMHO if you're buying Canon lenses, you need to buy the high-end ones to get decent quality, so you'd be looking at a decent pile of money. Since you obviously have a taste for manual-focus primes, it wouldn't make sense.

Now, I have heard of shooters of other systems picking up an older 5D purely to give you a FF body and the ability to mount many difference lenses on it (although I think some M42 lenses have issues with hitting the mirror.)

If you're itching for a new body, I would save a little longer or dig a little deeper and grab a K-7 - they are really quite incredible, especially if you're moving from a K100D/K200D.

Oh BTW, if you want, I have a K1000 here that I could send you as a thank-you for the Spotmatic, if you'd like such a thing.

I looked at the 40d and 50d and the 50d had more noise the higher the ISO which I did not like. There wasn't enough difference for the price.

I love my 40d! I have the 20d as well.

I do know the feeling - I am up to three K1000s as the latest came in a package deal with the Pentax-A 50mm F1.2. Also recently grabbed the BlackRapid RS-7, another Super Tak 105mm F2.8 (will probably sell for fairly cheap since it looks worn but the glass is A-OK), and, oh, I finally grabbed a Pentax Auto 110 with three lenses. That thing is too darn cool.

K17? Probably worth grabbing if you find a good deal - I think they're fairly pricey already and if/when the Pentax FF DSLR arrives, the values will only go up!

You may also want to consider a Katz Eye or similar... I'm probably going to ship off my K-7 to get one installed by them (to make sure it's shimmed properly) after I sell my K20D.
