Canon T5i vs Canon 70D

Any news on anything else in the Canon pipeline? I'm dying for an upgrade, but want more jump in ISO performance than the 70D is offering. I was really disappointed that so many of the benefits of the 70D are tied to things I don't care about, like video.

I have a great selection of lenses, but not for full frame, so I'm not ready to go that direction. Yet.

Then there's nowhere else to go in the Canon lineup. Lots of buzz with regard to the 7D Mk II coming Sept (announced, at least) but I doubt you'll get over one stop at best, and probably won't see the camera for shipment until Thanksgiving. Just MHO.

Unfortunately, the only real answer even remotely in the price range right now is the 6D and going FF, unless the 70D Mk II REALLY has some surprises that, quite honestly, noone is expecting since we are still expecting an APC-C sensor at the end of the day.

Yeah, you're probably right. The problem of course is that I always said they'd have to pry that 17-55 f/2.8 lens out of my cold dead hands. ;) I practically hyperventilate when I think about giving it up. And I can't afford to keep 2 systems going.

I upgraded from a T3i to a 70D a couple of weeks ago and I must say that so far I am very happy. I just got word today from B@H that my Sigma 18-35 has been shipped. I`m looking forward to see how that combo is going to work.

Congrats on the upgrade and on the new lens. I am getting closer to deciding to make the leap myself.

Anxious to hear what you think...would love this combo myself!

I think the next Canon crop evolution, which will likely be the 7DmkII since it's such an incredibly popular camera and the XD line tends to evolve with a MKwhater designation, will have more refinements in the ISO performance than a gain in range along with a slight increase in resolution. The 7D came up a stop or so short of an already dated 5DmkII when it was released as far as ISO performance goes, I expect it's replacement to do the same. I just wonder if Canon will follow the same pattern and use whatever the 7DmkII's sensor is in the XXD and Rebel lines. That's been a huge advantage for people who want the image quality of the 7D at a lower price point.

I love my 17-55 on my 70D. I've had it since my T2i years ago, but... the only reason I keep it is because of the 70D.

In my opinion, the 24-105/4L is just as good if not better on the 6D. Why? FF bokeh and more than one stop of light better anyway plus the extra range. It's about the same on the bottom but has a little more reach on top on the 6D. With the kit price, it can't be beat, and is among, if not THE, best walk-around lenses on a FF IMO.

If you're not keeping both formats, reselling the 17-55 will pay for the 24-105 in the kit. ;)

Don't forget that the 70D already has a new sensor, and while people are raving about the Mk II having an even newer sensor, I'm not sure I'm buying it just yet. I think you're going to see an industrial/pro level body with the same sensor as the 70D and probably some enhanced features or a MAYBE new DiGiC 6 processor. IF the new processor happens, and I still think it will be DiGiC 5+, I still think you will see a firmware update to the 70D within months to bring it right in line with the 7D Mk II feature-wise, or at least as close as it can come. We shall see.

I bet on the come on my 70D for my crop upgrade because I could have it right now and I really don't need a pro-level body for how I shoot. The only regret I have on my bodies is the weather-sealing at WDW but there's just too much money on the table to pay for the sealing just for Disney, at least for me. We'll see how good my bet was in the long run. :)

We’re told to definitely expect new sensor technology to be introduced in the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. This tech will be used in all forthcoming Canon DSLRs. What is it? We’re not 100% sure yet, though we’re told it’s definitely not a foveon type technology that we’ve previously seen in patents.

This may be one of Canon’s best kept secrets as it’s apparently going to be more than an “evolutionary” technology.

Now they have been wrong before but this will be canons flagship Crop Camera. No way they put the 70d sensor in this camera. IMO

The 7d was so far advanced for any crop camera at the time that even 5 years later its still one of if not the best crop camera for sports. I expect this camera will be packed with new tech we have not seen before. All other Canon Crop Sensor camera for the next few years will get the trickle down tech from this camera

If you are considering the 70D, Canon has refurbished body only for $959.20. If you do the Canon Loyalty Program (you get 20% off when you send in any old Canon camera), you could get it for around $768. I recently used the loyalty program to purchase my first DSLR (60D) and seriously, the camera couldn't have looked newer. Plus you get a 1 year warranty. Just something to consider. Happy shopping!

Thanks pittsburghmom for the info on this possibility. Is the loyalty program still going on? I checked the Canon website and can't find it mentioned. Is it just by phone that you can do it?

One other question for all on here. What are your thoughts on going refurb on a camera body? I bought my 17-55 f2.8 lens refurb from Canon and it has been great. Just did not know if it is riskier for camera bodies.

Thanks.

Yes it is! I just utilized the program about 3 weeks ago. I am very pleased with the condition of the camera and accessories. The very nice gentleman I spoke with on the phone said that they typically aren't even "used" models. Most of them are overstock that are returned or floor models. The camera department goes over them to make sure they are in perfect working order before offering them on the refurb page. The loyalty program was a no brainer for me since I was looking to buy used anyway. I sent in a 14 year old digital Elph that I was no longer using since I upgraded to an S100 about a year ago. A few weeks ago, I got refurbished Canon 60D ($460) and a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens ($70.55) through the Canon Loyalty program. My total after tax was: $563.22 I am happy with that!! The body was 20% off and the lens was 30% off. I wanted to get a 17-55mm f2.8, but they did not have any available. If you are interested in a lens, just ask....I was surprised the lens I got was even available through the program. Loved the 30% savings on that!

The man that I placed the order with said that once I get the camera, I just print out the pre-paid label they e-mail me and then use that same box and send in the old/broken Canon camera. It was super easy. According to my calculations, by purchasing the refurbished body & lens through the loyalty program, I saved $145! Not bad for trading in an old Elph!

Here is the # you can call to speak with someone: 1-800-385-2155. Yes, you can only order through the loyalty program over the phone, but well worth the time!

For those of you who have used the Canon loyalty program, what sort of stipulations do they have on the broken camera you mail in? If I decide to buy something, I don't want to send in a functioning DSLR. I have heard others say they bought cheap Canon cameras (sold as-is) on ebay to trade in.

If we're doing predictions, my prediction for the 7Dmii would be a new APS-C sized sensor between 20-24 megapixels, with even more phase detect pixels than the 70D. I think it'll also sport an upgraded AF system with 20 - 30 cross type points.

It'll also sport a burst rate of around 10 fps, and have a dual Digic 5+ like the 1DX or a single Digic 6. All of this will be in a body almost identical to the 5D mIII.

The original 7D had a brand new AF system, which later was improved and put into the 1DmIV 1Dx, 5DmIII. They also removed some options, and AF modes, and used it in the 70D.

As far there being a firmware update to bring any new features to the 70D, I wouldn't hold you breath.

The 60D was release a year after the 7D, the only thing they shared was Digic 4, and the imaging sensor.

For 70D, they purposely chose to remove a lot of the customizable AF settings, Single Point Expansion and Spot AF modes.

I would not be surprised if the 7DmII had the 70D's sensor, with a better body, better AF System, and faster burst.

It just has to be a Canon camera, it doesn't have to be working at all. You could go on ebay, buy a broken Canon camera, and they'd take it, I think you need the model and serial number of the camera you're sending to them. I'm sure you could call and ask them which models are accepted for the loyalty program.

There is also a limit to how many time/devices you can get on the loyalty program. I forget what it is but you may want to be aware of it at least.

As noted above and to elaborate, the loyalty program is not something you will read about on any Canon site. You must find out and find the number on your own. I don't think it's even published anywhere. It does work and I used it once to get a deal on a bundle a while ago.
