Canon T3i or T4i?????

The price difference on the Canon T4i:

Amazon - Canon T4i with 18-135mm + 55-250mm lens: Total $849

B&H - Canon T4i with 18-135mm lens + 55-250mm lens: Total $956

I have $50 in Amazon gift cards, so that would knock them down to $799 out-of-pocket. In this day and time, it's hard not to save $150. That's more money that I can put into my WDW trip for this June. Now, to just get the approval and go ahead from the wife! :worried:

Are you sure that price is correct? I just looked it up on Amazon and they list the Canon T4i with 18-135mm for $859! I do notice that they have the $150 off the 55-250mm deal, same deal I got in September, if you purchase together. I'm not sure if B&H has a similar deal?

B&H has exactly the same deal, i just looked. $959 for the t4i w/ 18-135 + 55-250

At the end of the day you need to order the camera thats right for you from the place thats right for you. All things being equal the majority of us are going to order from B&H.

Double check that Amazon bundle. I found one that has the 18-55 and the 55-250 for that price, but not the 18-135 with the 55-250. Because for that price, if it's from a reputable seller, I might be jumping in it for DH with the STM lens and the 55-250. Link to the bundle if you can.

One more thing that hasn't been mentioned in regards to Amazon, or any shop, is gray market. Gray market items (often found on the third party sellers on Amazon) are often cheaper than US and some do not list them as gray market. Gray market items don't have a US warranty. So if it breaks during what would be the normal warranty period you have to pay for repairs. Buying cameras online isn't as simple as place A has a lower price than place B so make sure you know exactly what you're buying.

Turns out that I was wrong about the price from Amazon. It is pretty much comparable with B&H in price. Apparently I was looking at the T4i with the 18-55 instead of the 18-135 and didn't even realize it. So I apologize for the confusion.

Now this begs the question, what is the difference in the 18-55mm lens and the 18-135mm lens? There is a price difference of about $200 in the T4i, with the 18-55 being less in price. Will I really notice a $200 difference?? :confused3

Is the 18-55 lens the STM version? Isn't that what you need for the camera to autofocus in video? I'd be sure of that before buying.

The 18-55mm is EF-S IS II, where as the 18-135mm is EF-S IS STM. I'm not concerned at all about the video, as I will not be using that feature.

No it's not, but you will still get video autofocus, it's just not silent (lens focus noise is picked up by mic). The STM motor is silent, although I saw a YouTube video that showed the 40mm had a slight "hum". The other advantage is that they appear to focus more quickly.

I started out with the 18-55 and 55-250 lens combo. They are both good starter lenses. The 18-135 has 2 major advantages, 1 it covers more range without changing the lens and as an STM lens is has advantages if shooting video.

If you are not shooting video I would think about focal range and what you think is best for you.

I will tell you this, when i got my camera and lens combo i said "there is no way im going to need more lenses then this" how wrong i was about that. The more and more you get interested in photography and want better quality images and have different needs from your equipment you will purchase new gear.

Im about 2 years in and I no longer use my 18-55 and 55-250. I have moved on to Sigma 10-20, Sigma 17-50 2.8 and Canon 70-200 f/4. Very happy with my current lineup.

For someone who is just starting out and this only be for hobby photography, nothing professional, in your opinion, was this a good starting point? And for what its worth, I don't mind changing lenses if I need to to get the higher focal range. If I happen to get more into photography, I wouldn't mind investing in different/better lenses, but it would still just be for a hobby. Most of what I will be shooting is vacations, birthdays, nature, etc. No video and nothing professional.

Sorry caa1977, missed your question about the differences with the lenses. Agree with nbaresejr, but want to add too it. The 18-135 STM also focuses noticeably quicker which also comes in handy. From sample images I researched on line when I bought mine, the photo quality was also noticeably better. It also feels much more "professional" When holding it. The 18-55 felt like a "cheap" lens to me.

If you can afford it I would get the 18-135mm! While it isn't hard to change lenses, it isn't always convenient to change out, or carry an additional lens or two. The 18-135 has basically replaced my 18-55mm 2.8 lens for personal use.

As a new photographer, unless you're shooting video, the only thing you're probably going to notice is that the 18-135 has a greater focal range. There are other differences, in the build and aperture (the 18-135 will be faster at 55mm than the 18-55), among other things. But as a new photographer they probably won't mean much to you now. However, down the road they may.

As far as where they fall in Canon's lineup the 18-55 is entry level and the 18-135 is on the lower end of mid level. For whatever that's worth.

It was a good starting point for me. I never planned on getting as much into photography as I did. My mother in law was going to get the DSLR to take pics of my kids (if we ever have them). As i was reading more and more about them i decided it was best if i bought the camera because I am willing to learn and play with settings to get the most out of the investment. My mother in law on the other hand would have used it as an expensive point and shoot.

I have no plans on being anything more then a hobbyist. I am just the type of person who when i do something i try my best to make it sure its done right. I am far from there in photography but asking questions and reading from people who are much better them me makes me a better photographer.

As you shoot more you will find you have different needs and wants. I found on my 1st trip to Disney with a DSLR that the 18-55 and 55-250 combo worked fine but left me wanting more. The more being a wide angle (purchased a Sigma 10-20). Just before I went to Europe last summer i upgraded my Kit Lens (18-55) to the Sigma 17-50 2.8, this lens is sooooooooooo much better then the kit lens (i was one of the people who said prior to what do i need a $550 lens for). I now understand you get what you pay for.

No sure if that answered your original question. The 18-55 is a good lens, the 18-135 STM is going to be better if you can swing it but my main point is somewhere down the road you may want more and that's where the serious money is going to come into play.

BTW, you can visit my flickr page (linked in my signature), all of the my disney pics were taken with the Canon t2i and the 18-55 or the 55-250.

I just wanted to come back and thank everyone for all the advice and responses here. It helped me out tremendously. :thumbsup2

I ended up purchasing the Canon T4i with the 18-135mm lens, a Canon 55-250mm telephoto lens, a spare battery and IR remote from B&H. I got free shipping, there was no sales tax and they also gave me a free 16GB SDHC card. I got all of that for less than just the camera and the extra lens from all the other companies I checked (even Amazon).

So thanks again everyone! I can't wait to get it and start playing with it.
