Canon S3

It seems to be OK, but I'm so worried something is going to go wonky soon. Has anyone ever dropped their camera and had it be OK?

I've never dropped my S3, but I've read plenty of threads on other camera sites about other people who have....

Unless there's a crack in the casing or something obvious (like a cracked LCD or the lens won't extend), you're probably OK. Aside from the lens assembly and motors and the LCD, there aren't many moving parts inside a digital camera that can break.

If it's still taking good pictures, now, it probably survived. :thumbsup2

You could probably take it to a camera shop and have them give it a once-over, too.

You might want to take a couple pictures of a brick wall (both wide and zoomed) to check to see if there is any unusual softness in any corners or edges that might mean something's out of alignment.

I need help with the Canon S5 CHDK. I found the proper firmware 1.01A. I downloaded the program that supposedly does all the "stuff" to make your drive bootable, but when I insert the SD into my camera, locked of course, and turn on the camera to the view photos, nothing happens. NO power, no nothing. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

I was hoping someone with an S5 would jump in and help you! With my S3, I didn't use the 'Card Tricks' method. Your card is 4G or less, right? If it were me, I would format the card with the camera and start over using the manual method. When I first with CHDK, I first used the manually loading method to make sure that worked. Then, I made the disk bootable. It gave me a warm fuzzy feeling to know that I already had it working manually before I tried making it bootable.

I took several different pictures, but this was the best one. With the following settings:

Av Mode
ISO 200
f/6.3
1/160
exposure -1 1/3
full digital zoom

Thanks :)

Thank you! It turned out great.

(oops did I just say I was Dis-boarding from work?)

:lmao:

Amy - have you considered renting a DSLR?

This is a picture I took of the moon last night, first one with my s5.

Here's mine cropped. Perhaps the different angle is due to the different part of the world (I'm in west Africa):

Here's the uncropped photo (reduced in size for posting) and settings:
  • Tv Priority setting
  • 1/125 shutter speed
  • f/3.5
  • 200 ISO (I think - I can't find this information in the photo file properties)
  • white balance set to tungsten
  • Full zoom
  • Manual focus set to infinity

I was playing around again tonight and liked this one:
  • Tv Priority setting
  • 10" shutter speed
  • f/2.7
  • 80 ISO
  • White balance set to tungsten
  • Full wide angle
  • Center-weighted average metering

I was playing around with my s5 this am and tried to get a water droplet pic again. I had tried before with no luck, but with the help of going back and reading LPZ_Stitch's instructions on using MF I finally got it :) Now I need to try again with a better background ;)

I just picked up my S5 IS last night... found a good deal on it at Circuit City for $299.99... I'm uploading some pictures I took today at a yard sale, soon as they're uploaded I'll resize and share them... After I finish playing with my new toy this weekend, I'll go back and do some of the assignments from earlier in this thread. I had read the whole thread after deciding on this camera, and the assignments looked fun.

When did you purchase this? I just checked their website, and it's $349.99 which is actually on the high side vs. Walmart and Best Buy. After reading this thread, I am sold! Thanks in advance for your help.

Color accent (scene) mode with flash. Very cool!!

Auto mode with flash. Only indirect sunlight in room. Colors came out very nice!

I know this pic was posted 2 years ago, but I must find that picture... Do you know where its available at? I have the Disney Villians poster, and this would be an AMAZING one to go with it

I purchased it a week ago today. May have been on sale for Mother's Day. Not sure though. But grand total taxes and all was about 328. For a while I had decided on this camera and happened to see it at that price and I couldn't pass it up. I just need to get back out there and shoot some more pictures...

I'm still planning on going back and re-reading the beginning of the thread to attempt water droplet shots and the other interesting shots people were able to get in the 'assignments'

Speaking of assignments, how about coming up with one LPZ Stitch?

Very nice shot... I attempted a similar shot with the settings shown and my picture turned out blurry. It may have been that I didn't set the focal point correctly, so off I go to read the original posts concerning water droplets.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to share a picture I thought turned out pretty good. Tulips are my favorite...

I was having the same problem, I resolved it by moving the camera back a little. It was too close for it to focus properly I believe.

I asked on this board a few months ago for suggestions for a new camera for an Alaska trip my DH and I are taking in July. Based upon those recommendations, I bought myself a new Canon S5 IS today!

Greta (4-1/2 month old White German Shepherd puppy) became my guinea pigright off the bat! Here are a few shots in the backyard with the camera right out of the box. Some were on Auto and some were on Portrait. I'm not sure which were which. These are my favorites...

Just got back from a trip to Phoenix and Sedona this past weekend.
Had lots of fun sightseeing -even in the "dry heat". :headache:
