Canon S3

I was talking to a co-worker at work last night who also has an S3. He said he had a problem with his LCD screen "whiting out" but turned out there was a recall on this anyway and Canon took care of it for him at no cost.

Has anyone heard of this?

I'm getting my A60 back tomorrow, as a matter of fact ... repaired free because of a related issue. I'm so happy - I loved that camera, and now I can give it to my son to learn settings and such.

edited to add: I don't see the S3 on that list (only the S1) but the late on the advisory was 10/2006. I have no idea if they've added more cameras to that or not.

Thanks, Madge. My friend said he bought the camera last December and had a problem in January. He sent it in and they took care of it, saying there was a recall about it. Maybe they meant there was a recall on another model? Or maybe there hasn't been a widespread recall on the S3 yet? At any rate, if people encounter this problem, it sounds like Canon will take care of it.

I lOVE these! I was thinking looking at them that I tend to forget that fireworks are just that....FIRE! I forget that they are explosive devices since they are just so pretty. You can see the actual *fire* in these. They are *scary pretty*!

I got my S3 Saturday and LOVE it so far. Can't wait to try it out in Dis in November!

CathrynRose ~ Your pics were the ones that got me wondering if I was doing something wrong. When I saw how red the red was in your pics, I thought I MUST be doing something wrong cause nothing else turned up red!!! I'll have to try when I go home tonight.

I read on an old post on these boards that if you have a dslr you are expected to do post processing to make the pictures look right, but not on a point & shoot--is that right? I have been wanting a dslr, but I do not do anything on my computer with digital cameras--I just take pictures, then take my Mem. card to a store to have a cd made & prints made. I really don't want to do anything on my computer with pictures, so maybe something like a Canon S3-IS would be better for me?? All I really want is nice looking pictures of my kids & my vacation photos to come out nice. HELP PLEASE!!

I have been photographing a series of shots of birds in a nest that have been developing over the past two weeks at my work. It is fun and interesting to watch as this nest is basically at ground level. They are song sparrows, I believe. Here are a couple pics I took with the S2 IS. They are all in regular P mode, I believe. Nothing special other than a bit of manual focus to try to get the birds in focus and the pine needles out of focus.

This leads me into a moral debate of sorts that we as photographers have to face from time to time. I would have some FANTASTIC shots if I were to remove the pine needles that surround the nest. It would be a photographers dream. However, in doing so, I would expose the nest to the sun, predators and most surely drive the mother bird from the nest forever. Most likely, this would result in the birds deaths. Something to think about when trying to get that super photo out there in the world. I opted, of course, to deal with the pine needles in the photos and find a way to work around the problem (manual focusing in this case).

I've had my S3 for about a year, and absolutely love it, but I haven't taken many pictures worthy of posting here. My son has been ill, and when I slow down a little bit, I'll see if I can find something. But I still love, LOVE the camera!

Love your bird pix, Andy! And I agree with you 100% - leave nature alone. So what if you don't get that "perfect" shot; it's not perfect if it destroys the nest or causes harm to the wildlife.

Here are a couple of my baby bird pictures. DH was trimming back our tree in the front yard over the weekend and Mama Robin was squawking like crazy at him, so he decided to wait and finish the trimming in the fall. But we can now see the robin's nest from our front window. These were taken through the window with my S3, on P mode:

LOving the baby birds - we have a nest with three baby birds in a bush in the backyard - but whenever I lean in to try to focus to snap some pix - the MAMA BIRD swoops down at me - she does a dive-bomber move at me - not sure if she'd actually nip or peck me but I don't need the shot badly enough to find out - LOL

Other than a slightly larger LCD screen and larger pixel count (and capability for a separate flash, which I wouldn't use) I can't find a lot of difference - other than a big difference in price.

From comparisons on other sites, the S5 seems to take pictures with very-slightly lower-quality IQ than the S3 (mainly due to the larger pixel count on the same sensor) but with the more advanced DIGIC III chip, it apparently takes very well-exposed pics (plus, the face detection seems to help quite a bit if you take lots of portraits).

But, the biggest differences are the bigger/sharper LCD, the hotshoe, and the 4G limit for video. It's also got a ISO 1600, but it's horrible.

If you don't need the hotshoe, and are happy with the smaller screen and 1G video limit, the S3 is a much better value (features & IQ for the cost), IMO.

For the cost of the S5, you can almost get a DSLR ... of course, you wouldn't have the reach of the S5's zoom or the video, but you'd have much better IQ, low-light performance and the ability to grow your collection of lenses.

I got it to work finally. When I plug my camera in, it goes to "camera and scanner wizard". And it would just say "an error occurred during transfer" when it really even wouldn't start. So I opened the zoombrowser and it saved that way.

Babboo and I just purchased a Canon S3 IS!!!

I'm still looking it over and trying to figure all of it's features out, so I don't have any "good" pics to share yet.

If anyone has any tips please share!

Fireworks!

I'm not sure how they turned out - quality speaking, but I think they're ok for a first-timer? These few were the only ones worth keeping. I tried the firworks mode and that was a disaster Night snapshot or scene worked much better.

Try backing up a bit. Sometimes the camera is simply too close to the subject to focus.

In Super Maro, I think you can get as close as you want, but in regular macro, there is a minimum distance that it will focus from.
