Canon S3

I joint the family a few weeks back :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: I just haven't put any pictures up for everyone to see. These aren't very good and not as nice as everyone's here but here are some of my practice shoots.

Those aren't too bad (especially the second one), but you could reduce the Purple Fringing by closing down the aperture (shoot in AV mode, with it set to 8).

Also switching to spot metering helps to get the maximum light which keeps the exposure nice and neutral with no blown highlights.

You already know about the tripod.... :thumbsup2

Went to the lake today and was playing with the accent color feature....

thought this looked cool!

Your pictures are great!

Could you please explain how to do the accent color feature? I've been trying to figure it out.

Its time for me to get brave and join in on the fun ! ! !

Love all the helpful info.........still learning, but trying and loving it.
I changed the resolution, hope its an easy load and doesn't take away the sharpness.

With a 6 year old niece around I thought I'd play with the sports mode.
I love it ! ! !

This picture wins the AWWWW Award!!! Beautiful! Was the whole effect done on camera, or did you change it afterwards to get the B&B with red accents?

I am trying so hard to play with and learn this camera before we leave. :scared1:

Fireworks!

I'm not sure how they turned out - quality speaking, but I think they're ok for a first-timer? These few were the only ones worth keeping. I tried the firworks mode and that was a disaster :sad2: Night snapshot or scene worked much better.

These are 2 of my favorites:

Thank you for the fireworks tip!

I have been looking at these boards for awhile now and have never felt the need to join until i found this thread. I just got the S3 based on the pictures i have seen here. I look forward to sharing some of my pictures in the near future.

:welcome: Rusty! You're going to love the S3! Be sure to post your shots, even the ones that don't come out very well. We all learn from everyone's mistakes on this board.;)

^ Kathy, I really like the fruit bowl one.

Anyone know a way to get rid of the "glow circle" around the sun?

Not very good at explaining the color accent feature...anyone else???

Here goes: you choose Color Accent under the SCN mode. Hit the "set" button - you'll see a small square in the center of the viewfinder. Put this square over the color you want to accent (you may need to zoom in so the color fills the entire small square). You'll also see a number in the viewfinder - I believe it goes from 0-2. This is how "sensitive" you want the color choice to be (i.e., the exact color, or lighter/darker). After making your selections, hit the "set" button again and take your picture. If I didn't leave out any steps;) , you should now have a picture that's all black & white except for the color you chose.

 I know who I'm coming to for simple tips!

Thank you!

Thank you for the compliment.
I changed it afterwards to get the color change with a photo program. I like having the orginal and then if it doesn't do right I can start over.
Still learning...........and enjoying everyone else's photos.

Does anyone know how to take pictures in dark rides w/o flash? I'm still practicing and learning about my S3, but there's not really a good way to practice for dark rides......is there? TIA!!

Unfortunately, a dark ride is the *worst* place to try to take a picture, and even the DSLRs with their prime lenses struggle to get good pics.

For an S3, the shooting conditions on a dark ride couldn't be worse. The low light and constant motion means you've got to shift up to ISO800 and get a *really* noisy pic because you aren't going to get a fast enough shutter speed (and, you probably won't get one even with ISO800!).

The best you can hope for is the ride to break down and stop with the lights still on so you can take a longer shutter speed picture. ;)

Semi-off topic, but I just had to share: The final poll is closed for the Chip & Dale weekly photo contest, and my Spectromagic parade shot of those rascals came in a 3-way tie for first! :cool1: (I took it with my S3, so I guess it's not really off-topic.)

I've been doing the weekly contest for over 2 years, and only once did one of my shots make it to the finals and then it came in 5th or 6th. This is the first time I'm in the top 3!! YIPPEE!

I just had to share my joy with you......if there were a cash prize, you know I'd share that with you guys, too.:rolleyes1

Ok, now back to your regularly scheduled thread.........
