Canon S3

Ok, so I gave it a quick try. I tried to incorporate both photography and Disney into one shot so I used Princess wrapping paper in the background. I thought this was cheesy enough to get a laugh, but to my amazement, it was more than that! I think the photo (as far as catching a drop) is mediocre at best, but the droplet is cool!

Heidi,

If you locked the focus right on the part of the faucet where the water comes out (the lowest part) you would have probably had a perfect shot there. Keep trying! You have good timing at least. It took me about 30 shots and I barely got that droplet on the frame! I have to keep trying, now. It 's a mission!

I got my hawk photos the other day while at work! I just quietly slipped out and grabbed the camera from the car then hopped into the woods where I saw it fly. They never knew I was gone!

OK, so I am really going to embarrass myself here.

Maybe I should do the better one first. This came out pretty well.

The water drop was another story. We (myself, DH, DS) spent almost an hour and went through probably 50 or more pictures trying to get a decent water drop shot - and still didn't get one, LOL. I think it was too "washed out" using the flash too close. We used a small tripod on the counter with both the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Maybe we'll have better luck in daylight. Sadly, this is the best we got.

It was a fun assignment, though!

The wine glass one is great! Nice Job!

I forgot, I have to look for a wine glass. We don't drink wine. I just don't think it would have the same effect through a Guiness beer glass.

We actually use these as water glasses. Interesting, I washed the glass and dried it with a dishcloth prior to the shoot - the camera picked up the lint on the glass...

We're on our way out to check out high tide. Probably will be too dark for pictures, but I'm going to try...

Ah, c'mon you guys! You WOULD pick this week for all these cool assignments, when I have to work extra days for "mandatory" training and I have meetings/rehearsals every night. I don't have time to try these at least until Thursday night. And by then, you'll have another assignment and I'll have even more to catch up on. Oh well, I'm getting lots of inspiration.

Andy, great job with Ariel! Guess you've got this all figured out now, huh? Probably only took 10 shots to get it right this time!

Heidi, I was wondering what settings you used for the bird feeder shots? Nice "bokah" (or was it "rokah") in the background.

Thanks! However, I think I will have to keep trying this shot over and over again to make sure it is just perfect! Funny though, the more times I try it, the fuzzier the pics look. Hmmm...

I also like the pint glass shot ... the flash is obscuring the Guiness logo on the glass; have you ever tried diffusing the flash with some tissue paper?

Pea-n-Me: It looks like you've got the same wine glasses we do ... nicely done! You and Heidi appear to have the same problem with the water drip; it doesn't look like you were focused right on the faucet where the drop comes from. I found that Automatic Focus just wasn't accurate enough ... it kept trying to focus on other areas of the faucet than where I actually wanted it -- so I switched to manual. In your case I can't tell what the AF's doing, but in Heidi's case it looks like the camera focused on the back of the sink bowl instead of the faucet....

Heidi: Awesome birds-at-the-feeder shots ... lovely bokeh! You seem to be in really close ... were you using any digital zoom, or just optical?

I so need a new camera, but I'm just so bad at making decisions! Everyone on here seems very happy with their S3, and Office Depot has it on sale now for $279. That sounds like a good price. I guess I just need a few "go for its"!

So do you love your S3? Any negatives with it? What features do you really like on it? And is it good for a fairly inexperienced photographer (but I'm willing to learn!)?

I never tried diffusing the flash. Always meant to give it a try, but never got around to it. I'll try that on tonights liquid treat! Also, I will have to get a 16 oz bottle to fill it past the logo better. This is alot of responsibility, but I think I can handle it.

Gotta get to work on the rest of the princesses now....

I did actually have it on manual focus. But that begged another question, now that you mention it. Many of the shots seemed out of focus. We tried everything we could think of to focus: backing up, depressing shutter halfway, we even tried turning the lens to no avail. Guess I need to look more into how to focus when in MF. Thoughts?
