Okay....just got back w/my brand new S5 and I did ok! There were some snafu's (a whole hour's shooting at the Yacht and Beach Club turned out AWFUL) and I still don't have a good handle on nightime, but I had some success. I looked for details to photo, beyond just the regular touristy pics.

Here's a few of my "bragging photos"

Believe it or not, this was taken in almost full daylight in the Boardwalk lobby. The sun was hitting her just right and rendered the background a dark black!

While waiting for Illuminations, I popped off a shot of the giant tiki in front of me! It was keeping me warm!!!

I put this view of the Boardwalk from our balcony together w/Stich Assist. Pics were taken at approx 7 AM. I never quite mastered nighttime shots, so nothing at night.

I was majorly impressed with the S5's video. I'm not one to spend my vacation looking through a video camera so the ability to take small snippets of video quickly w/out changing cameras was awesome. I filmed the holiday ending to Illuminations, Devine at Animal Kingdom, some Osbourne Lights, the action on the Boardwalk as seen from our balcony and the Pirate handbell choir at MVMCP. I direct an elementary school handbell choir and I can't wait to show them!

Yay for the S5! I have nowhere to go but up!!!!

Great pics everyone!

Here's one my husband snapped of my Christmas lights - he cut out my favorite part of the yard though with the trees. It gives me an excuse to go out and try getting some better ones of my own tonight though.

Okay....just two more! We got a glimpse of Devine in AK. Overall, an OK picture but now I understand but a "blown out highlight" is! Is that fixable in Photoshop?

And some experimenting w/isolation aperture at the Beach Club. I also got some great Macros of the same poinsettia!

Wow! These pictures are just amazing! I've been looking for a non-SLR camera that could take good concert shots and I think this camera could be exactly what I'm looking for! Has anybody tried this camera at live concerts????

Well, all that was clear as mud to me! I think I need to learn more of the Photoshop basics before I branch out into this stuff, beginning with learning how to read a histogram. Thanks anyway!

Sorry. What I was meaning was that I wanted to darken the sky, so as to make the firework trails stand out even mode. I did that using "Curves", and everything that was dark was made darker. That kind-of worked, but the dark trees were also made darker, and that may have been a bad thing.

The correct, but time-consuming way to do this would be to select every area that I wanted to change, and then only make changes to those selected areas. That way I could have selected and darkened the sky, but omitted the trees and left them that little bit brighter.

I hope this helps some of the sediment settle from the mud :D

regards,
/alan

I've used my S3 for my boys' band concerts, but the kids are pretty much stationary. I guess Festival of the Lion King at AK is pretty close to a concert setting. This is from our recent trip:

I tripod would really help, but I used Sports mode, hand-held and ran my photos thru Noiseware.

I went and did it! I just purchased the S5 from Beach Camera. I paid for expedited shipping, so hopefully I'll have towards the end of the week.

Now if I could only find some photography classes near the Houston area. No matter how I search, even looking at community colleges, I can't seem to find anything.

Wow, Amy, that is great! I think this camera is just what I need! Now I gotta go write to Santa and ask him (or her) for one. ;)

Hey gang! A question for the S3/S5 users! Who can describe for me the difference b/t Night Scene and Night Snapshot? The explanation in the manual is 98% the same.

I fired off a great handheld picture of a World Showcase tiki in Night Snapshot and it turned out FANTASTIC!!!

I'm curious as to what the differences b/t the modes are, though.....

Hi Everyone,

Just bought S5 this weekend at Circuit City. Ordered online and picked up at store. Same price as low price online retailers after $30 off and another 10% for picking up in store.

I have question about memory cards. I picked up a 2GB ScanDisk UltraII for $25, but I want to get a 4GB to be able to have room for video, etc. How fast a card do I need and what brands? Do I need a HCSD? Do I need a Ultra or Extreme or will standard do?

If going above 2G, you *should* go with SDHC ... SD cards with capacities above 2G are not actually compliant with the SD standard. That's not to say that 4G SD cards won't work, but I'd rather not be worried about losing 4G of pics/video because something isn't following the spec.

Unless you use your High-speed Continuous mode a lot, speed doesn't really matter in an S3/S5 (and, the S5 is, unfortunately, a little slower than the S3, in any case). Normal SD cards (and Class 1 SDHC cards) should be fine.

I do like to use my High-speed Continuous mode, so I make sure that all of my cards are UltraIIs (or equivalent).

I've read reports that slower cards can sometimes cause a video clip to end prematurely, but I've never seen that happen with the 2G "standard" SD card I do have.

One of the review sites I read while I was deciding between the S3 and S5 recommended a 4GB Class 4 SDHC for good quality videos, less shutter lag (good for the continuous shooting setting) and to download your pictures faster onto your computer. That's what I got and I've had no complaints and I've taken video and lots of pictures. Whether or not I would have the same experience with a smaller, slower memory card I have no way of knowing, just giving you what information I used to help me make my decision. :)

Congrats. :cheer2: And welcome!
Just don't try taking pictures of my kitchen in that florescent lighting. lol I'm still messing with the white balance & flash strength for kitchen color to accurate. You've seen my attempts on the remodeling thread. lol Everything else is great though.

I added S5 to the thread title since we are one big happy family. :goodvibes

LPZ_Stitch! and FletchFab5, thanks for the info! :thumbsup2
Now, if I can just get comfortable with it before we leave for VWL in 9 days :santa: It is just a little bit different from it's replacement a Kodak DX7440. :rotfl2:
