Canon S3

$395 for an S5 is a pretty good deal ... the S5 is a great camera. It's slightly noisier than the S3, but still at the "top of the heap" as far as superzoom cameras go (based on various camera site reviews).

If you feel that the bigger LCD, flash hotshoe, and 4G video limit are worth about $100 ... I'd suggest you get the S5.

If these extra features mean nothing to you; get an S3 and spend the extra $100 on SD cards or a lens adapter and a Teleconverter or Macro lens. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the input and the link! Now I just need to decide which to get, but it sounds like they're both pretty good. Thanks again.

this may be a stupid question but is there a S4?? other than the bigger screeen is there really that much difference between all the different number S's...

we need a smilie photographer.

There is a S45, but that is on a different model line

I think the S2 to S3 had the bigger jump
the S5 has bigger LCD, more megepixels with a bigger chip, but lesser image quality and can shoot up to 8gb movies

From what I've heard on other forums, the Japanese word for four (shi) is the same word as "death" and it's considered unlucky the same way a lot of Westerners think 13 is unlucky. There is no Canon Powershot S4 IS.

The changes were incremental throughout the S-line, with each camera offering a little "more" than the previous. The difference between the S1 and S2 was a little greater than the S2 to the S3, which seems a little more than the S3 to the S5. So, it seems to me, that the changes are growing smaller as the line has matured.

The S5 will have a little more noise at high ISOs than the S3 due to the higher megapixel count... in other words, don't let the higher mp sway you towards the S5, it's really a point in the S3's favor. :) You also obviously pay a premium for the S5 as it's so new. $400 is a lot of money for a point-n-shoot, you can get a DSLR for that kind of money.

I have been looking at these boards for awhile now and have never felt the need to join until i found this thread. I just got the S3 based on the pictures i have seen here. I look forward to sharing some of my pictures in the near future.

:welcome:

I took this picture on Tuesday night and I thought it came out pretty good considering it was handheld in the wind with a cat rubbing up on my leg!!! lol :) I know I'm supposed to use a tripod for moon pics, but I was too lazy to get it out. Anyway, just wanted to share :goodvibes

I don't have an S3 but I did recently buy an S5. Here's two that I've taken. Hope they're not too big and hope it works! I've never posted a picture before. And don't ask me what settings my camera was on. It literally had come RIGHT out of the box!!

I am LOVING my S3 - got it in April and I've gotten some pretty good shots - the waterlily one was right after I got it - and the bee and pink flower ones were from a few weeks ago. :)
