Canon S3

WOW!!! wish I had know about that before I purchased the S2IS in November - would have been worth the wait!!! I LOVE my S2, however it's not a great action camera - my daughter is a gymnast and I really have to work to get a good shot during a meet (due to the horrible lighting in most convention centers!) - this one would make life much easier with the sport mode and the ISO800!!! VERY SWEET ---- what's the life expectency on the S2? LOL ...

I have read on here that many of you are having trouble keeping your lens caps on these cameras. Could you share how you have resolved this issue (if you have)? And does anyone know if the new S3 coming out has this problem fixed?

I read on another site where someone with the same issue took the strap and put it across the lens then placed the cap on-Just be sure the little metal clip is not over the lens, so it won't get scratched. I tried it and have been using this method for a while - it does hold it tight - so tight that if you don't take it off before kicking the camera into shoot mode, the lens makes a terrible sound and doesn't extend! :rolleyes2 soooo - always check it before you start to shoot!! don't want to burn that motor up!!! It would be nice if it were a tad bit tighter, maybe the new S3 will have it fixed!

I want (not need ;) ) a new Canon for my next trip... Whatcha think, should I buy the S2 now; wait & buy the S3 or wait until the S3 is released & buy the S2 since the price will probably drop????

Also, other than 5 vs 6 megapixels what & the color what is the difference (advantage) to the S3???

Good question...I am wondering the same thing...

Personally, I would wait for the S3. I want every advantage a newer camera can offer. :)

I'm waiting for the s3 so that the s2 will drop into my price range. It's still $600 here in canada for an s2 right now :(

Sanka, I'll help you find a better price for S2 for you in Canada (from an authorized Canon dealer).

However, I'd wait for the S3 if it is just for the ISO800 and the gune metal colour (I hate silver).

OK I'm tempted to wait... but when exactly is it to be released?? I saw on Amazon 5/31/06... I leave for Disney 6/9... not much time if it's delayed & not much time to get used to it!

Maybe the release dates for Canada and US are different, the ETA for Canada is the 4th week of April or 1st week of May the latest.

That's the problem... I live in PEI, very small population, so there aren't many camera specific shops around, and most of them are kodak specific. So i'm stuck to buying either from Future Shop, or Staples Business Center.... which have them on for $530 right now, but still a little to pricy for my pocket book right now...

I just don't get the reasoning behind the big price difference. I've seen many places in the US selling for around $320-$350... even after converting to Canadian dollars, it's still about $150 cheaper to buy in the states since there is no duty on photographic equipment. Just PST/GST and shipping.

I'll check it out for you on Monday how much my friend (who owns a camera store) can give it to me. Whatever she gives me, I'll pass it to you plus whatever shipping cost may be.

Hey Kelly,

Thanks... no rush though... I think regardless what the price is, i'll probably still have to wait a bit longer to afford it... we moved in feb, 1 month before the end of our lease at our old place, so we had to pay 2 rents in feb :( Also, Feb just happend to be when our last trip was, so we are in a bit of a financial recover mode right now! LOL

I would still be interested though in what price you can get.

Thanks

it's not the camera that takes good pictures, its the mind and creativity of the person doing the work behind the lens,,, buy the camera now

True, but only to a certain extent. There is no way some of my work can be done if I can't boost my camera to ISO 1600 or ISO 3200

Here's the link to Canon's website.

and here's the link to its review at DC Resource.

It seems like the ISO800 performance on the final product is worse than the prototype product Canon have shown me during the dealer's preview meet last month. :( Oh well, at least it's still gives you the option of ISO800 and it is still a tad cleaner than ISO400 of S2 IS. Nothing Imagenomic Noiseware can't fix ;)

The price is a tad cheaper at www.zipzoomfly.com -- $479 (vs. $499 elsewhere.) That's with free shipping, and no tax outside of California. They claim to have it in stock, ready to ship.

You may want to wait a bit and see other reviews -- and see if the price slips further as it becomes more widely available.
