Canon S2

My S2 should be here tomorrow! Yeah! I can not wait to play with it this weekend.

Better yet, I found that I had to amend my income tax return for some interest paid that I had forgotten about, and what they owe me over and above my return I should be getting tomorrow more than pays for the S2 package I purchased. Now I can stop feeling guilty:guilty: (well just a little!)

I love to play with the pictures (you pros call it manipulate LOL!!!) on the computer. I've been trying to figure out PhotoImpact 11 tonight and not getting very far!

Hi everyone,

Hope you can give me some advice. My parents told me they'd split the cost of a new digital camera for me for my birthday, so I've been doing a lot of research (my birthday's next week). I have the Rebel EOS in film now, and am looking at upgrading to digital, because I have the lenses and everything already.

I've heard a lot of good things about the S2 IS though, and it is cheaper. However, the Rebel is cheap enough that cost doesn't matter that much. I just want a really solid camera that will last a long time, so that's why I was looking at the 350 D.

Photo background - I've taken a few courses in HS and College and won't end up doing this for a profession, but I just like doing it often for fun. Plus, I'm going to Hawaii for spring break and I can't wait to take some awesome pictures! So which do you feel is better?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!!

Depends on your need. I need high ISO, I need zero shutter lag. If that's the case, dSLR is the only way to go. If IS is a concern, don't worry, S2IS Image Stabilization is about 2-stop advantage. Just set your RebelXT to ISO400 for moderately bright scenes and ISO1600 for indoor/dark scenes.

Oh, and the dSLR instantaneous power-on feature is also a big plus.

So, for me, although I love S2IS, now that I already have my dSLR, I won't even bother with S2IS anymore.

You want to go crazy? get dSLR with a kit lens for now and wait for another month and (supposedly) an 18-200 IS lens will be released too (by Canon)

If you have lenses, you can get the Digital Rebel body only and save about $100 off the price, too.

I'd go with the dSLR. I have the original Digital Rebel and I love it.

Also, obsiouly if you have multiple lenses you already get that benefit at 0 cost.

The S2IS is a nice camera, but you will get better photos from the Rebel XT (less noise, etc)

If you've already got the SLR camera then go with the dSLR. When I went digital 4 years ago the dSLR's were out of control price wise. They've finally come down to my budget and I'm the happy owner of a Nikon D50 (having been a previous 15 year Nikon owner). If you didn't already have the SLR then the S2 IS might make a better choice.

Just my $0.02.

I love my Digital Rebel. I've had it for two years now (maybe time to move up to EOS1d .... my DW would shoot me though) and it works great. I bought it because I have an EOS1 film camera with lenses that fit.

Get the Rebel.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! Looks like i'll go with the Rebel, which is what I wanted to do to begin with -- just wanted to make sure before I told my parents ;)

Nice...I was looking for a compact camera for a trip to France...Looks like I found it.

I noticed you said compact.

You may want to take a look at the new Panasonic DMC-TZ1K.

It sells for around $350.00, Has 10x optical zoom (35mm-350mm)Lumix® 5 Megapixel, MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer & High Sensitivity Mode.

It is the world's smallest 10x optical zoom digital compact measuring 4.41" x 2.29" x 1.58". It will fit into your pocket.

Neither dpreview or Steve's have sample images for that Panasonic. It would be nice to see some.

A week ago I couldn't decide between the Canon and the Panasonic Z5, and went ahead and ordered the Panasonic from Amazon after DH decided for me. Well, after originally giving me a shipping date of 2/22, they changed it to 3/9!

I have no patience whatsoever, so I went ahead and paid the extra $30 for the Canon. :rotfl2: It'll arrive tomorrow.

(I really wanted that one a little more anyway, so I'm glad it worked out that way.)

I plan on ignoring the thread about the new Canon S3. According to DH, it's always better to wait and get the new technology. Agree or disagree? I think I'll be happy with what the S2 has to offer without getting the newer one, don't you?

Welcome to the world of Canon S2 IS. :thumbsup2 I got mine in December, had no idea that they were coming out with a new one. I am still in the learning process but enjoying it very much.

Oh dear! I will never be able to make a decision if this keeps happening! :scratchin

PS: no, I don't think the S3 is offering THAT significant of an improvement. The only thing that will sway me towards S3 is the ISO800 capability (I take LOTS of low-light pics) and the fact that it's gun-metal in colour (I dislike silver... although my phone, Palm Pilot, car, earpiece are all silver)

Mars, there will ALWAYS be a new one just around the corner, in ANY tech field, cameras inclusive. When you want something, pick a point in time to buy, make your budget, do your research, go with it. Repeat again some point in the future.

Enjoy.

If you constantly wait for new technology you will never buy a camera.
