Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT

I like the 18-70 kit lens I got with mine. But 28 would probably be wide enough (even being equiv. to a 42mm FOV) for most people. An alternative to the kit lens would be the Sigma 18-125mm. Nice range. The 70mm on the Nikon kit lens is a little short for me.

$999 for the camera/18-70 with a $50 gift card and a free (after rebate) photo printer is a great deal.

I'm itchin' to get a longer zoom. The one I have my eye on now is the Sigma 80-400 with optical stabilization. I have that feature on my 4.5 year old Olympus and really miss it some times.

ok what if you are going to use the auto mode a lot? I've been going back and forth between the D70 and Rebel XT.

What I like about the digital SLRs is the reaction and 'turnover' time. The delay on my Sony is killing me.

here's what I asked on the other thread

Can I piggy back with some questions too? i'm leaning towards the Rebel XT too. Is it hard to use. Is there an automatic mode or several auto mode (like the sports mode) I do a lot of recreational shooting and don't want to spend ages setting up each shot. I had a 35mm Rebel years ago and the manual focus drove me batty when using the camera for shooting snapshots.

RadioNate,

One big difference between the two lines, whether in auto or not, is the flash sync speed. With the D-Rebels (300 and 350) it's 1/200 sec. and 1/500 sec on the D70. "Great, so what's that mean?" The "flash sync" speed is the highest shutter speed that the flash may be used at. It doesn't take much movement (hands are the most likely culprit) to get motion blur in your image at 1/200th.

Both cameras are "instant on" when turned on, but testing shows the D70 has less shutter lag (time between button press and camera firing).

And again, the D70 kit lens is much better than the XT lens. It have a wider zoom range, is a "faster" lens in terms of aperture (f4.5 vs f5.6), and uses Nikon's "silent wave" focusing motors (equivilent to Canon's USM lenses).

A lot of people like the ergonomics of the D70. It's "feels" better in their grips. But not everyone feels that way.

Both cameras have their share of "scene" modes. But to be honest with you, I think they are worthless. They are mostly marketing gimics.

llilj, would you care to post some? I'd love to see!

Hi vettechick! :wave2:

I got my computer back. Yipee! So here are a few pictures that I took of WISHES with my Rebel. This was my first time using the camera and it is evident that I needed practice, but I thought that the shots were ok.

Enjoy!

Hey Lil J ;) Looks great! That last one really shows the beautiful colors of the fireworks. I've spent the last week researching deals for the XT and can't wait to get one!

Thanks for remembering to post pics for me!
