Canon EOS 20D vs. Nikon D70S

Depends on how old the lenses are. The lenses I got for my N70 10 years or so ago still work with my D50.

Most likely they will fit. The only issue you'll run into depending on how old they are are the auto focus and aperture not being automatic.

You may want to look at the most recent issue of Popular Photography. For a couple $ more you could get the 30D, the latest and greatest Canon, the upgrade to the 20D.

oh cool, thanks.

another question, do you know if the d200 will take old Nikon lenses? DH's old camera is a nikon. I'll have to get back to you on the model #...he has like 20 lenses for that...

here are the packages, but again, don't know enough about lenses to make an educated guess. thanks again! :)

It should be compatible with nikon auto focus lenses, but not manual focus lenses.

Also be Carefull with that vendor, I have never read a 100% positive review about them.

thanks for the heads up on that vendor...we probably won't be ordering from them anyway...

so how is the 30D vs. the D200?

30D is not out in North America yet. In terms of digital noise, based on what Canon showed us during the invitation-only show, the D200 still can't beat Canon in noise clarity.

I will, however, buy a 30D with vertical grip.

thanks Kelly...

like I said, DH is itching to order a camera...today...um, lol

anyway, I'm having difficulty finding anyplace that even has the D200 in stock, it will have to be ordered, and most camera shops are packaging it with the 18-200mm lens...

Like I said b4, if buying today(I am not) and I did not have any existing Canon equipment(I do). The D200 would be at the very top of a short list, 30D would struggle to be 2nd on that list(depending on tests after release). Right now I still rank the 20D above the 30D, I understand the 30D has some nice extra features but none that would effect picture quality that I could get from a 20D at a lower price.

IMO
$300 from 20D to 30D(current pricing).
buys me Spot meter(thats it), all other features are nice but I would not pay extra for them.

$300 from 30D to D200
Would buy me bigger image size, weather seals and BIGGER BUFFER that not only handles about twice as many RAW images as the the 30D but they are BIGGER files to begin with.

So to me the extra money from 20D to 30D is not as justifiable as is the extra money from 30D to D200 that actually buys me something I feel I could benifit from.

Yes Canon appears to have better high(and low) ISO noise performance, but the Nikon is pretty good also. Better than any Pentax, Minolta or OLY that I have seen.

IMO downsizing is a great way of reducing noise. In other words comparing a 8.2mp image from a Canon to a 10.2mp image of out the Nikon viewed at 100% would be apples to oranges(IMO). If you were to downsize the D200 image to 8.2MP the noise would be greatly reduced and very comprable to Canon. Same as if you were to upsize the 20D(30D) image upto 10.2mp, the noise would also be increased.

Have you tried BUYDIG?

Considering that your DH already own lots of Nikon lens (I'm assuming AF version of Nikon), I don't see the point for you to get a Canon (unless you really want to change "sides"). Save some money, get a Nikon (this is IF you are not starting from no lens at all).

PS: as far as noise go, just use noise reduction program. There are tons out there such as Noise Ninja and Noiseware.

oh, and if you want to buy a camera NOW NOW NOW and start from scratch, just get the 20D. Save your money.

It was first launched in mid Dec '05 so it hasn't been out very long and demand is pretty high.

That 18-200 is a drool lens. I'd love to have it. But its currently to rich for my walet (prices somewhere over $700 lens only). I've read a few reviews for it and they look great so far.

btw, do you guys think that a macro lens is a good investment?

I enjoy some macro photography but have also ended up buying secondary lenses in the same focal range. The reason is that if the macro doesn't focus right away it will seek ... this can result in the loss of pictures you might have hoped to have. If you don't wish to do this, you can simply go to manual focus during times the lens might seek.

Mike

p.s. with regards to the 70S vs. D20 ... I went throught the same when I bought my Canon and it came down to the fact the rebates offered at the time brought the Canon to less than the Nikon...Canon also has a slight edge on Image quality. If I were comparing what is available right now it would be between the Nikon D200 and the Canon 20D

Just wanted to share with you all a little something we picked up on Saturday:

I can't thank you all enough for your awesome advice. We went to DH's grandpa's house and picked up a few lenses before heading to his grandpa's favorite mom and pop camera shop. Yup, online discounts be darned. LOL

Anyway, when we got the new toy home, we were pleased to discover that DH's flash works fabulously with the new camera. Dropped a little more cash than originally anticipated :teeth: , but we are quite happy. DH, being a long-time Nikon user was pleased to see that the D200 is similar in use to his 35 mm slr. The shop didn't have the kits with the 18-200mm lenses, so we got the 18-70mm.

Thanks again, everyone! I'll post some pics when we take some that are worthy to show...LOL

Being a Canon shooter since the 80s, I would prefer you post the less than worthy Nikon images :rotfl2:

Me too. I bought the 55-200 to complement the 18-70 that came with my D70, but I'm not thrilled with it. It focuses too slowly and not always very accurately. It was inexpensive, and I suppose it isn't a bad lens for the money. But the great reviews I've seen on the 18-200 have me salivating.

I have a friend just got the 18-200 (I use the 18-125, got it before the 18-200 came out) - lovely lens she has!
