Hi all! I know a few of you (Zurg!?!) have a Canon Digital Rebel EOS camera. DH and I are considering one. What are your pros and cons? Is it too big to lug through life, esp. WDW? We have two kids (6 and 3) that we think are pretty cute and like to document their lives - what do you all think of this camera?

I have the canon digital rebel and love it. However, if you don't consider photography a hobby, just a casual thing you may consider the camera to be too big.

If you're looking at the Canon digital rebel, then you probably should look at the canon 10d and the nikon d70. However, if your main goal is to possess a top quality digital SLR camera at the lowest price, then the rebel is your best bet. You can find them discounted for under $900 with the 18-55mm lens.

Also, part of the reason for purcahsing a true DSLR is so you can get additional lenses for different purposes: zoom lens, wide angle, etc. Lenses can cost as much (or more) than most other digital cameras, so if you don't see yourself needing an array of lenses, again, the DSLR may not be a good fit since there are all-in-one (point and shoot) type cameras that are cheaper and have similar functionality.

The discussion goes on and on. Anyway, if you want something similar to the Digital Rebel, the 10d or the d70, in terms of functionality, but smaller/cheaper then try the canon s1 IS (3 mega pixel) or the canon pro1 (8mp), or the canon A80 (4 mp)...

feel free to e-mail me for more info...

Thanks!!

JJSWDW is right. First decide what you want to do with a camera. I was a semi-professional and own enough Canons to start a war.

I considered the Rebel digital and took a pass on it only because I didn't have a need for it. And I own lenses that are compatible with it too. One thing was the size and all the things I had to carry. Before it came out I had (and still do) a G-1. The new one is called the Canon powershot pro1. It is an 8 megapixel.

I got my wife a Sony F-707 (now F828). The F707 is a 5 megapixel, the 828 an 8 megapixel.

I just got the Sony DCS-T1. It is a 5 megapixel ultra compact that fits in your shirt pocket.

If you aren't going to crop pictures and not make prints bigger than 8x10 a 5 megapixel is more than enough. I started out with 8x10s but found out everyone including myself like the 4x6 with an occasional 5x7.

Go to this website. Tehy do an excellent job of reviewing digital cameras.

owner of a d30, d60, s40, and too many canon 35mm models to even count over the years
i would reccommend a g6 or possibly trying to score a good price on a g5, this actually is a little larger body than it's replacement, the newly announced 6, good for bracing aginst trashcans and lamposts to help minimize camera shake
i will be upgrading soon to either the new d20 or maybe the 1d-mark 2 since i shoot a lot of motor sports as a hobby
definitely get into either microdrives or a bunch of 1 gig cf cards and a couple spare batteries, i find myself shooting a lot more shots in digital and then i delete and decide on keepers at home and you would be surprised at how many batteries you can go through each day
it's not uncommon for me to come home from a 7 day wdw trip with 700 plus shots to go through
i went dslr canon because i already had a substantial investment in canon glass

i forgot to add that i do carry along the d60 to wdw, i usually start out the day with it, particularly at ak in the morning, most of the time with the 28-135, that's my usual walking around lens, sometimes i haul along a 200f2.8 plus 1.4 tele-extender, that combined with focal multiplier of the sensor gives me a workable 448mm f5.6, which is a smaller and lighter package than my 300 f4, true it's not is, but i can still get the shots most of the time

This is a different kind of camera, but same make....

A Canon Powershot A70......

its really easy to use for the beginner, yet has features for the moderate or advanced.....

Hope this helps :)

I would reccomend the Nikon line of digital SLR cameras. We are looking at the D70 we currently use a Nikon F80 35mm SLR and a Canon G2 digital and a camcorder and we carry them all with us every day at WDW along with 3 kids 7 3 and 1.5 I love the images from the Nikon line of cameras you can't go wrong with them very high quality and very dependable.

garylpn -- Let's fight a war....my canons against your canons:p

I've got the original F1, A-1, 10s, eos650,g1 z115, AE1, movie camera I don't know the model no, or where it's at, a bunch of lenses, flash unit. I didn't think it would happen but I have gotten into digital in a big way and like the smaller size now. And the reduced cost of taking pictures. Film has gotten expensive. I'm shooting like the old days. Lots of pictures.

Can you give me some support and put in a good word to my wife. I'm also looking at the G6, but she said she would shoot me with it. Say cheese.

One thing about the G6, or any camera you can put an external flash on, is the elimination of red eyes. They are caused because the built in flash is so close to the lense. Using the external flash moves the flash position far enough away to eliminate red eye.

I brought out the G1 to shoot Wishes and had forgot how nice the camera handled. I should get around and put the pictures up on site.

Micks, you asked about the Rebel and getting a ton of info. Bet you didn't expect that. If you have any questions fire away we will be glad to help. Except for sending money to buy.:teeth:

i haven't actually had my hands on a g6 yet, but i'm really considering replacing my s40 as my point n shoot as it would still fit into my fanny pack at wdw and still give me a larger body for a better grip, many people don't take into account the effects of just breathing when using these smaller cameras
i do a lot of competition pistol shooting so i'm used to trying to trigger something between breaths, i've found the same skills very helpful during photography especially non-tripod, also developing a good basic 3 point combat pistol stance, works well using the triangle theory of bracing
i may go g5, especially since it has enough pixels for a great 8x12 print, i only print larger maybe 1-2 times a year for special family or wedding photos, and as the g6 moves into replacing the 5 prices will drop on remaining dealer stock
never discount using the wdw trashcans, lamposts or railings as stabilizers, i got some very good shots of the millenium parade from the balcony at the japanese pavilion using the railing and/or trashcan tops

micks - If you're only planning to take pictures of your kids at WDW and such, I probably wouldn't bother going into a full DSLR like the Digital Rebel. It's not heavy and you could certainly lug it around all day without too much trouble, but you'd be better off just getting a high-quality digital point&shoot for that type of photography. I have a Canon 10D for my pro auto racing stuff and I got tired of having to take it with me, if I just wanted to get some shots around Disneyland or something. I recently picked up a Canon A80 point&shoot and I love it! It fits in my pocket and I can do all kinds of shots with it (including video clips). At 4 MP, the pictures look terrific! If you're not planning to do any kind of pro or semi-pro shooting, I think you'd be best served to look at something small and easy to tote around all day. I would definitely recommend sticking with Canon, though. They're very easy to operate and I've never had a problem with any of my cameras (and I've had 5 Canons).

Magix is right about his advise. Walking around you will appreciate compactness and lightness. The Sony DCS-T1 fits in my shirt pocket and the palm of my hand. It is 5 megapixel and the movie clips really suprised me in quality. It's not like a full fledged DV camcorder but is darn good. Also it will take movies as long as there is free memory.

When you go into the camera shop don't just look at one brand. Have the clerk take out several. Handle them and ask questions. You want one you are comfortable with. I would do this on several different days to prevent you from buying on impulse.

Another thing to consider in addition to the megapixel size is the quality of the lense. You can have a 200 megapixel camera but if you don't have a good lense you won't get a good picture.

Here is an open secret in the industry. Many (maybe all) camera brands are using the Sony's 3.2, 5 and 8 megapixel CCD sensors. They tweak them with their programs to their specs. Canon uses CMOS sensors on their DSLR cameras. (not sure if on all).

here is another link to a very good site, check out the review section on 8mp cameras, i will be checking out the minolta dimage A2 based on the reviews on this site, and if i do go this camera it will be my first purchase outside of the canon line since my mamiya medium format equipment
these are a group of cameras that give high quality photos without the weight and size of dslr, these also give more lens than pocket cameras, yet are not that large and heavy for carrying in an oversize fanny pack, a class of cameras worth a look for your purposes. unfortunately no one camera does it all, something i've had a hard time explaining to my wife during the many purchases and upgrades

ita with going to several camera shops and trying out different cameras to find one that feels right, controls in a comfortable place etc, try to narrow down your choices to about 4-5 before going to see them and make more than 1 trip to prevent impulse/latest gadget sales talk influencing your decision
one thing to keep in mind about digital is they are like computers, todays hot model is next years obsolescence, figure 5 years from now it'll be just as useful and fast as a 5 year old pc, there is never a best time to buy, if you wait for the improved model you'll always be wondering should i buy or wait
buy something you'll like and use, upgrade in 5 years
