I have a co-worker who wanted me to post a question to you guys:

"My camera is a Canon AV-1, and I want to know why the shutter stays open longer when I try to take a picture at night? Plus, what would be a good digital upgrade."

Any advice??

It stays open longer b/c it needs more light to get in to make the proper exposure. Depending how invested in the system your co-worker is, they might want to consider all the brands. If they only have one or two inexpensive lenses, they are likely to replace them anyway. That is assuming the lenses they have work on Canon DSLRs. I am not familiar enough to tell you, but there will be someone that can tell you.

In general, the Canon FD lenses (for Canon Ftb, F1, AE-1, AV-1,...) for film do not "work" with the digital cameras. The mounts are different so there apparently is an adapter, but I have heard that it does not work well. However, the lenses from the Canon Rebel or EOS film cameras (e.g. AF and later lenses) do work with the Canon DSLR. The focal length is longer (a good thing for telephoto lenses). I believe the factor is 1.2 or 1.6 (forget which), so a 50 mm lens becomes a 60 or 80 mm lens, respectively. Hope that helps. My older 50 mm 1.4 lens works very well with the digital camera in low light -- I'm able to take very good hand held Lion King Show photos with my Canon Rebel DSLR without a flash.
