Canon 550D (Rebel T2i, Kiss X4)

okay well I'll have to get an account.

Looking at pictures:
I believe it was already set to spot metering; I'll try the center metering.

but
most were iso 100 425 was the highest
40-60s were the most of them there are a few 100s
f 4 and F 5
I read some last night to figure out where all the buttons were. I'm going to test it out today.

If you were in spot metering, that could be the problem too - spot metering is hypersensitive to where that little central cross point is pointed at - you may have a fair skinned and haired child and think that spot metering the face with all that light color would tell the camera to meter down and get a good exposure - but the tiniest little dark area happens to fall under the spot meter, such as the center of the pupil, or a nostril...and the metering will get it all wrong.

That's where center-weight will be much better.

Wow! That's pretty good that you've already figured out the different metering modes. When I had my dSLR, it actually took me several months (maybe like a year) before I found out that cameras even HAD metering modes.

Your Canon T2i has 4 different metering modes:
  • Evaluative
  • Partial
  • Spot
  • Center-Weighted Average

According to page 211 of your user's manual, the default metering mode is "Evaluative" when you're shooting in Auto Mode. If you used your camera right out of the box without touching the metering mode, then you were probably using the "Evaluative" metering mode.

Here's a picture I stole from the Internet that shows 3 of the 4 metering modes (it doesn't show "Partial" metering modes):

If you really were using "Spot" metering, your camera would have shown the box with the dot in the middle, like I described in my earlier post.

zackiedawg's suggestion for "Center-Weighted" metering...the icon is a box with nothing inside.

Hope that helps.

Sounds to me like you should return the camera and buy a NIKON! :cool1:

So far, I have always been a digital P&S user. Last SLR I had was an SLR, not a DSLR, so quite a few years ago. I have recently asked here about Canon's SX1 IS, SX30 IS, D12, and so on. I am warming up to maybe a DSLR. I do like Canon overall.

Any thoughts regarding the subject camera? I am completely new when it comes to DSLR.

Thanks.

The T2i is a great camera. I had a hard time deciding between it and the 50D when I got my last camera. To me, which camera you choose depends a lot on the features you want.

Any chance you still have lenses from the film SLR? If so, they might still work on a DSLR.

I've got a T2i ... by *far* the best camera I've ever owned.

There's *nothing* I don't love about it! :goodvibes

I had a Canon Ftb, manual everything back in the 70's. All I have is a 50 mm 1.8 FD lens, not of any value I would think.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

I am looking at a $795 kit price at Best Buy. Good price?

I gave in to my inner self, now have a 550D Rebel T2i.

I may be stopping by to ask questions. :flower3:

I am strongly kicking around a CanonTi2 before next WDW adventure. Now if I can get my DW to strongly kick it around with me ... its a done deal. I'm thinking a NyQuil smoothie for her and some "alone time" with the debit card for me. She gave me a NyQuill smoothie and the next thing I knew, we had a new puppy! I could take pictures of the new puppy!

Thanks everyone. Never thought I would get a DSLR, due to size.

Marty, I did purchase at Best Buy, but had them price match online http://www.centraldigital.com/Product/?11852493. And they (BB) have 0% 36 month. Store is 18 month, BB website is 36, BB store matched BB web. I won't take 36 month for sure, but if I did, it is less than $25 month. Maybe the smoothie and that will work.

congrats on the new baby :) I have the T1i and I'm looking for a reason to buy the T2i, but can't come up with one right now :)

I've been happy with my Xsi, but it's limited to 1600 ISO. But I keep daydreaming about having a higher usable ISO. I know the T2i goes higher. How much of it is really usable? I know the T2i has video, which I might use and enjoy, but would not upgrade just for that. So is it worth it to upgrade?

tough call, the xsi is a solid intro to dslr camera...but the t2i is pretty much the same thing, just with expanded features. for the money, it might be better just to save up some extra cash and get the canon 7d. either way, the T2i is a good camera, but for the money - i dont think its worth the jump from the Xsi. plus the 7d has ISO of 100-6400 which is expandable to 12,800. which is fairly awesome.
