Canon 50D

Well people...The more I read on this camera the more I am convinced that it's the one for me. I can't wait for it to come out. I already have over $1000 saved for it.

I am not even going to go look at it :) I bought the 40D with the promise to myself that when the 50 came out I would completely ignore it.

so i'll end up needing new lenses as well...and a wheel barrow to carry all the $$ to the camera shop

I'll be getting one for sure. I would have gotten a 40D a month or two ago when the rebates came out, but luckily for me I was laid off from my job and that purchase got delayed. Looks like the nation wide mortgage crisis helped me upgrade to an even better camera (can you tell I'm trying to find the silver lining in all this?).

I am thinking either the 50D or the 40D but I definitely want the EF-S 18-200mm 3.5-5.6 IS Lens as a walk around lens....It would take the burden off weight wise when I go to France next year.

I can't wait for the reviews.

These super zooms typically have thier "compromises".... and I had the canon 28-200... a coke bottle of a lense for sharpness and color. I've tried the Tamaron 18-200 and that one achieved stunning pop in sharpness with great color... when it could focus... which oddly enough was about 15% of the time. It had a curious handling quality ... and I did NOT care for the build quality and feel in the end.

The 18-200 will be an EF-S lense - so you're not working with the optical sweet spot here ... so vignetting might be a real issue ... as will the overall performance at extremes of focal range and aperature.

I think you really should try out the lens in he store... shoot several dozen image to YOUR memory card and examine the output. I'll bet the enthusiast test results will reveal several performance compromises in such a lens... otherwise they would have repackaged such a superlense into an "L" body and slapped an "L" price to go with it!

I for one am humbly soldiering on with the venerable 28-135IS and the newer 70-300 IS. I have nothing of merit to shoot below 28.

As for the 50D.... I think it should perform well... if the recent track record for Canon is any indication. The core competantcies are god for IQ with thier new DSLRs... (please correct me if I am mistaken)... compared to other manufacturers who have NOT survived the scrutiny of independent reviews for IQ and otherwise.

SO... I am - for the moment - coveting a 50D when it emerges into general circulation. HOWEVER, I am perpetually frugal... and am disillusioned with purchasing a NEW model DSLR when in a scant 12-18 months the manufacturers replace it with yet the latest "must have" configuration. It smacks of silly momentum thinking to have to have it now when in perhaps as little as 2 years it will depreciate to less than half the cost. IE, Ritz camera is selling a 30D for $695and it was INTRODUCED in Feb of 2006 and replaced in AUG of 2007 .... which I was seriously considering. In 2.5 years this great camera has gone from being a hot DSLR to a final markdown model?

I know the holy grail is having a DSLR that is equal or better then film in sharpness, tone, dymanic range and so on... but I already am enjoying tremendous results with my venerable 10D. That's right... a 10D that was introduced in Feb of 2003 at $1999! At the time that was THE hot prosumer DSLR to have.

At any rate... on spec and by reputation I have strong expectations with the 50D. Undeniably it is a HOT APS-C DsLR to have... one I would take in a heart beat IF it were priced at or under $1000. The 40D is a fine DSLR too... but the 50D seems to boast of much much more for just a few hundred more.

Jumping up to a 5d or the anxiously awaited 5D replacement (originally announced Aug 2005... so it's gone uncharacteristicly 3 full years without replacement!). However, the market for this particular spec FF DSLR is smaller than the cheaper APS-C models.

At some point we all know they will start selling FF DSLRs near $1000.... and the APS-C DSLRs will be all floating at $500-700 at introduction! The manufacturers are enjoying a brisk business with digital phtography in these GOLDEN years... and I am happy to a part of it ... in my own way!

I for one am considering the 30D seriously... otherwise ... I'll hold out for a REBATE on the new 50D... which might not emerge until next summer or possibly next winter!

I would really wait to see some reviews(as you stated you will), because I would be curious to see if it has reached a point where it starts out resolving some lenses. Mega zooms might be the first to show such an effect, and EF-s may exaggerate this.

Even though I am optimistic... ANEWMAN has sage words of advice. Even with the touted gapless lenses on the sensor and NEW DIGIC 4 processor... and Peripheral illumination correction (like in camera DxO in some ways?) it would be nice to see a few reviews touting the performance as being as expected.

I too might have jumped at the 40d a month ago .... instead I bought a HD Camcorder to fill a gaping hole in my memory recording arsenal. I gave Canon the nod with getting thier HF100...

I ended up shooting near 50GB of footage these past 3 weeks ... and I have yet to start editing and burning to Bluray DVDs. Shoot.... I don't even HAvE a blu ray player hooked up to my HDTV yet! But .. at least I have the memories recorded to HD.

At any rate, I am hot and egar for the 50D... and curious about the 5d replacement. Who knows if I'll really get a 30D... and if I don't I'll be waiting for the 50D with my prevailing opinion!

50D?????? WHAT?!!!! :scared:

But my 40D is only 6 months old...and I haven't even learned to love it yet. Still some buyer's remorse since my XT had fit my bill fine. :sad1: :headache:

Guess what ...

... don't worry about the 50D surprising you one bit! Because in about 12-18 months those 50D buyers may be coveting the as yet to be announced 60D! And here I am sitting back and relaxed with my perfectly decent 10D! Or maybe I'll soon be buying the deeply discounted 30D!

Enjoy your 40D... as folks like ME would LOVE to have what you have! As many who don't have a decent DSLR would love to have my 10D and lenses too!

Darn you Canon! I just got my 40D last November! LOL.

It's ok. I'm still learning all the functions on the 40D. Between last November and today, I've taken more than 5,000 pictures so I guess its been put to good use :) That's just the way technology goes.

our ecomony has been stinkin as well so while the 200 off made me drool more i thought maybe another one would be coming soon...hopefully work will be better by the time the 50d gets to the price i want to pay

having read about resolution issues before with some older lenses(one of the ?-70s the older one in particular) can someone explain exactly what the problem is? will the photos be less sharp? the lens not work at all or what? tthat made me wonder in the past about the older line up of lenses some say work with "other brands" of digital cameras..why don't they have resolution problems?

wow are these the new custom functions buttons?:lmao: after using the top line enough the green one will come in really handy

What am I missing? I just bought a 40D, it doesn't look like that. :confused3 BTW, I'm glad it doesn't.

LOL....me too. I bought the 40D and promised myself and others around me that this would be IT for the years to come.

And if the 50 is even heavier than the 40D, then that settles it for me. :)

Actually more like 3 MP too far. Based on a review on DPreview.com Canon's 50D gains noise but little detail over their 40D. It seems as if the sweet spot for APS-C is 10-12 MP, anything more leads to noise and today's lenses can't provide enough resolution to take advantage of more pixels on that size sensor. Dynamic range also suffered from what the 40D offered.

Canon was in a tough spot, their Rebel series was up to 12 MP and it was difficult to justify another $600 for a camera with less pixels (40D). In the race for pixels though it appears as if Canon went a bit too far.

I wonder who will have the guts to introduce a new camera with LESS MP, but with substantially reduced noise and substantially improved dynamic range.

Interesting review.

As you know, I like to do stage photography (http://www.stagepics.co.uk). I am currently using a 350D, but I am led to believe that the 40D has significantly better IQ at high ISO. I have been thinking for a while about whether I could persuade the wife to let me have a 40D. When the 50D came out, I started thinking again about it.

With £580 for the 40D, against £900 for the 50D, I think that the 40D has it hands-down!

Fuji did, with the F30. I don't think it did very well :-(
