Canon 400D (Rebel Xti, Kiss X)

Because I am kinda in the same boat. You want a fast lens but honestly without the magnification, if sitting pretty close to the event. I got the Nifty Fifty and I'm am getting ready to go on our next trip to WDW and I am already worried that we will be too close to the parade and get a bunch of close ups. Not a bad problem, but wish for some more flexibilty in magnification. So if sitting a ways up in the stands, magnification is not as bad.

Here are some recent fall foliage pictures!

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm forwarding this on to my sis. She's really in the shop mode at the moment - I've been put on hold. DH said I need to work with what's available at the moment :guilty: However, I'm taking notes and pinching pennies!! One never knows when a good buy will come along!!!
Thanks again!
Blessings,:)

Hi Everyone!
I've been looking at this camera and found the body for $250-300. I have lenses, so I would not need those. Should I be leary of a seller that I found on shopusa.com that sells this camera body at this price? Thanks for your help!

Sounds like a "too good to be true price", I would not deal with them. Maybe someone else will come along and give you more info.

www.shopusa.com appears to be a shipping company for people who live outside the USA but want to buy from people who only sell/ship to a USA address.

Who is the actual transaction with? I don't think you are going to find many "safe" place for less than $500. Anything less than that is probably as scam.

maybe it wasn't shopcartusa.com then. It was similar to price grabber. You put in what you are looking for and then it spits out all sorts of online stores that have the product and the best prices.

My BF also says it's too good to be true...but I really want the camera..Figures I find a decent deal and it won't work. I don't want to throw money away.

Thanks for the insight.

I'm going to bet it was shoppingcartusa.com and it's very much a scam. Do a google search on the company offering it and scam, I'm sure it will pull up a lot!

I can get to the dell thing in time...family members have been giving me money for Xmas...So, I might just have enough...We will see.
Thanks!
and thanks to all of those who replied!

Merry Christmas everyone!! :santa: With all the holidays and 3 kids birthdays rolling in between November 6th thru December 30th, it's been hard finding time to check in on the boards!! I just wanted to post a followup to my original post from Thanksgiving -- Santa was extremely good to me!! :cool1: My wonderful dh gave me the XTi and two lenses - the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and the 75-300mm f4-5.6 III (not the IS one) I LOVE this camera and can't wait to really get to know all it's features. He skipped the kit, but picked up the basics at a better deal than the whole kit from Costco. My question at this point is - what do I need, equipment wise, to fill in between the two lens and does anyone have experience shooting sports (gymnastics) with this telephoto lens? Good or bad? I'm really thrilled with my new toy and am looking forward to playing around with the new stuff!! Recommendations on filters would be great as well! Thanks everyone!!:)

I appreciate any help I can get! I am in the market for a new camera and I'm going to go the SLR route, at first I wanted the Nikn d40x, but after much reading and comparing I think I've settled on the Rebel XTi. What do you suggest for lenses? I saw a bundle at sams that came with the kit lense and then a 75-300mm lense. I don't really want to have to mess with changing lenses until I can really learn the camera and understand it. I have a 2 yr old and we mainly just take pics of him and then of course family stuff :) Any suggestions? Also, I am thinking the Image Stabilization is going to be important for me because I get shaky hands sometimes. And can anyone explain the nifty fifty lense? I've been reading alot about it but not quite sure I understand :)

Thank you sooooo much for any responses, I really appreciate it!!

If you want to go DSLR with IS, then skip the kit lens for a Canon or Nikon and just buy an IS lens right away. If you want to save a little money and get IS, then go with a Pentax, Sony, or Olympus b/c their newer models have IS built in the body so it works on every lens.

Nifty Fifty is just a nickname people have given Canon's 50mm f/1.8. It is a prime lens meaning that it has a fixed focal length. The wide aperture on it allows it to give you a faster shutter speed. It also allows for a smaller depth of field when you need that. The downside is that it is a fixed focal length and the restricted depth of field when you do not want it. Pretty much every brand has a similar lens. Nikon's is also inexpensive, but it will not auto focus on a D40. The Pentax model costs a little more, but it is also a little faster at f/1.4 and has a more rigid build quality. I am not sure much about one for a Sony, but even if they do not offer a new one, there are sure to be used Minoltas around that work on it. I believe the Oly (4/3 system) one is pretty expensive. I do not believe that anyone offers an IS prime lens, so if you want it on one of these, you would need to get a body with IS.

oh gosh, thank you soo much for your response. I don't know what to do, if I stayed with the rebel xti what is a good lense with the IS that you would recommend? And do you think there is that big of a difference with or without it?

Thanks soo much I really appreciate this!

I like the IS feature, because I typically have a little more shaky hands (caffeine/ nicotene) not the photgraphers friends.:thumbsup2 Like the OP stated however it only works on the camera end (when movement occurs with the camera) like normal shake and even mild movement due to rides. So if you experience these conditions, you will like the IS feature. It will also help you with nightime still photos. Now as far as photographing family, do you intend to do much indoors? Like family get togethers, holidays, etc? If so you will need a wide lens and also a fast aperature. Now you are where I am at in the need of a lens realm. I have the 85mm f/1.8 which is great for portraits of an individual. Not good in the house for an all encompasing photo because way TOO much magnification. I have the nifty fifty which is also f/1.8 and not as clear (IMO) as the 85mm and still way too much magnification for good shots inside the house without flash. So I am currently considering and researching the Canon 17-55 IS USM. Yes it is expensive, but if you don't buy the camera as a package, this pairing IMHO would be a great walkaround combo and cover almost all of the additional lenses I have bought with the exception of telephoto. There appears to be good reviews on this lens even comparing it to almost an L rating. So again I know it is expensive, but in the long run it will save you money from buying multiple other lenses in the wide end. I honestly bought lenses haphazardly and I am trying to suggest you don't and really know what you want to do with a lens and shop for that particular lens. Don't just buy a kit, because it appears like a deal getting a camera and lens. I am very happy with me Rebel xti and wishing you the best with yours. :thumbsup2

As DizneyNutz points out, what the best lens is for you often depends on your budget. I am not very familiar with the Canon lenses, b/c I have a Pentax, but I know many people use one with IS that is something like a 28-135mm. My problem there is that 28mm is not very wide for a DSLR.

With ukcatfan that if I were searching for a good walkaround lens I would go wider than 28mm! I personally like the 17mm/18mm on the wide end if looking for a zoom lens. For instance I had my lens set to 17mm for the fireworks at the MK and Illuminations and was not able to catch all of the fireworks in one frame without moving the camera. I just positioned the camera where I thought I would catch most of the bursts and then left it alone. Again depends on what you want the lens to do most often, is what will decide which lens is right for you. I currently have the 17-55mm 3.5-5.6 lens and wish I had the 17-55mm 2.8 for the increased speed of the lens which is why I am shopping.

I bought the Canon xti about a month ago - love it!

I got the body only on Amazon and bought the 18-55mm IS lens. This is a very recent release by Canon and a big improvement over the 18-55mm lens that comes in the "kit". You can get the body only for $529 and the lens for 173. Amazon usually has free shipping and no sales tax.

FYI - Amazon will price match their own price for 30 days. I paid $579 for the camera - got a $40 credit when it went down to $539 and another $20 credit when it went down to 519 - just call or email and they will credit your credit card. (I think the price has since gone up to $529).

Also check out the "nifty fifty" - it's only $70 and although cheaply made, has wonderful optics and is regarded as having great "bang for the buck".

Enjoy whatever you get,
Debbie

I am sure the IS would help some but it is still 3.5-5.6 just like my 17-55. It matters in all indoor rides/shows like Lion King, POC, etc. You would have to try to time your shots at moments in the show where they are pausing in position. (Like I did). I am sure the 18-55 is a great lens and I used my 17-55 (non IS) most frequently on our last trip. It is not fast enough however and I am trying to let you know what I experienced so you might not purchase a less expensive lens to find out that it doesn't do what you need or want it to if you intend to use it there.

wow, okay! Thanks for all the responses :) You guys are so helpful here, I love it!! I never thought to check amazon, but the bundle I found at sams with the 2 lenses, neither one has IS, so maybe just buying the body and going that route with the different lenses. I don't really have a budget per se, my husband just doesn't want me to get out of control LOL!

Anyways, thank you very much! :)
