I am hoping to get some opinions on the Canon 28mm 1.8 and the 35mm f/2 lenses if anyone has experience and would be willing to share their thoughts! :goodvibes I am currently using my 50 1.8 pretty much all the time and want something a little wider on my 1.6 crop camera. I so appreciate any advice, thanks!!

Those lenses are EF versions; which means that the 28 & 35 are the numbers for full frame cameras. For crop sensors, those numbers will increase. So basically, if you use the 28mm on your camera, it'll be more like a 44mm lens. So for Canon, the lenses that are say EFs-28mm will be significantly wider. But I don't think Canon makes a prime EFs lens that is wider than 50mm. But Sigma makes a good 30mm f/1.4 that is actually a 30 for your camera. I have one myself for my T1i, and i love it!!!

I'd post images if I wasn't using my phone for this. But if you visit my Flickr page, the very recent pics of Dogweed, the wands, and Honeydukes, were taken with that lens.

I definitely understand that, that range is actually what I'm hoping for on my crop. :) Eventually I plan on upgrading to a full frame, at which point they'll be nice to have as well. I am definitely going to check out your 30mm Sigma pictures, that is another option I was looking at but wasn't as sure about Sigma as a brand. Thanks so much!!

I love the 28mm 1.8. It's my go to lens for in the parks for everyday use when taking pics with the characters. It gets me close enough to allow me to crop a bit at home but still keep the sharpness I want.

This is one of my favorites.

If U like the 50 U will deff like the 28mm

SrisonS,

That's actually not correct. The crop factor of the focal length of a lens is the same regardless of whether it is EF-S or EF. So a EF 17-40 and a EF-S 17-55 have the same field of view on a crop camera.

Likewise, a EF-S 60mm macro would be an equivalent field of view to a near 100mm lens on a full frame lens.

The sigma lens you mention has a equivalent Field of view on a crop camera of near 50mm...not 30mm.

Hope this information helps you in the future.

Canon EF and EF-S lenses are measured the same when it comes to focal length. An EF 28mm lens has the same angle of view as an EF-S 28mm, when both of them are on a 1.6x crop camera. The only difference is that EF-S will *only * fit on a 1.6x crop camera.

The focal length is the focal length, no matter what camera the lens is on. Only the angle of view changes between full-frame and crop cameras but it has nothing to do with the lens. Sigma's 30mm has an angle of view of 45 degrees, Canon's 28mm has an angle of view of 75 degrees (47 on a 1.6x crop camera).

I see VVFF beat me to this. ;)

This is what I was hoping to hear! After reading SO many different things online, I was leaning more and more towards the 28. Thank you so much for the opinion!

Thank you both! The earlier comment about the 30 had me a little confused, but I thought it was just something I hadn't heard before since I don't know much about Sigma. With the crop factor it is still right about where I want to be, so I'm considering it. I think I am leaning more towards the 28 still though.

boBQuincy, thank you for that explanation about EF and EF-S. That is something I had not realized and will definitely be more conscious of when purchasing.

Sorry, showing my ignorance about the 50mm they had. I was thinking something totally different about it. So yes, I was wrong. **sheepish**

Just got my 28mm 1.8 LOVE IT!! I bought bec/ I have a crop and thought 50mm would make me stand more back then I wanted to (shooting portraits). Its the perfect fit for me.

Awesome, thank you for sharing!! The 50 does cut it a little close when you're in the action and can't really step back as much as you'd like to. The focus distance on the 50 also doesn't allow me to get as close as I'd like to sometimes, the 28 seems a lot more lenient with that.
