I am posting this from my DHs laptop, somehow my desktop PC was shut down incorrectly and I can NOT restart Windows (XP).

Not in 'safe mode', not in 'last known working configuration'...no matter what I try, it just keeps going back to the 'windows did not start successfully' window.

I really do not want to lose everything by doing a system recovery with the start up disk...any ideas?

I am bumming, huh?

shamelessly bumping in desperate hope that someone will wave a magic wand and make my PC all better, LOL

Sorry PAW! My laptop wouldn't shut down last nite either. Maybe it is SNARKY COMPUTER day!

Hope you get it fixed soon. If not then just trade computers with DH. :thumbsup2

My computer had an attitude and I had to put the Windows CD in to restart. I lost nothing in the process.

Before you do anything, I would like to suggest that you call a local computer shop that can give you some real advice. That's what I did and he told me to put in the CD. I then brought it in for him to look at because my Windows actually had trouble opening up. My screen was blue with DOS letters filling the upper left quarter of the screen. Weird.

Anyway, putting in the CD did help, but I brought the computer in anyway. My computer guy put some upgrades on my computer (just downloaded them from Microsoft). He thinks I may have had a virus.

Hope your computer feels better! :cheer2:

The same thing happened to me last week on a 20 month old Dell desktop. I called Dell tech support and they walked me through some steps and determined my hard drive crashed and Windows could not be reloaded. They were so excited to send me to the sales dept. to buy a new hard drive. I said no thanks and will have the Geek Squad or someone come here this week and determine if anything can be done. I'm sick to my stomach over the loss of all of mine and my sons' iTunes that we purchased. I'm hoping my hard drive can be recovered.

So far, it has cost me $1300 because I'm on my new laptop as we speak.
