Canned chicken?

As several other folks have mentioned, I also keep some around for "emergencies." I buy the all white organic Valley brand, and it's really ok. Is it as good as fresh rotisserie chicken? No, of course not, it's canned. Nothing that is canned is as good as fresh. But it's definitely good enough in a pinch/emergency. We have been without power here for a week before.

Walmart brand is pretty tasty.
I have never seen the whole canned chicken anywhere here, but I haven't bought a fresh whole chicken in 30 years (not counting the whole ones they sell cooked and ready to eat at the grocery store). We only cook with skinless boneless portions.

That's the scariest thing I've seen in a long time:eek: Cannot imagine eating it.

Excellent point!

We have never been without power for more than a few hours. Faced with a multi day power outage, I would happily use canned chicken.

Anyone else feel bad for the chickens who gave their lives to become canned whole chickens?? Most of them probably get thrown out.

LOL. Yes, I feel bad for those poor chickens.

The photo on the label sure is an accurate representation of that thing sliding out of the can. :lmao: I don't want to say here what it reminds me of.

Apparently SOMEBODY is buying and enjoying whole canned chicken; I've heard about it when I was a kid. But I've never actually seen it in a supermarket. Yes, I've looked for it.

Canned chicken breast is OK in a pinch, and a lot of markets now sell cut up rotisserie chicken, not just Costco.

I keep a can of chicken breast chunks in my desk in case I forget my lunch. Pretty darn good when you're hungry.

OP here.....Yeah, that's what I was originally talking about, the chicken chunks in a can (similar to tuna fish) not the whole chicken in the can. That looks dreadful. LOL

I've never had the chicken chunks though. Well maybe one time in a hot dip a long time ago, but I can't really remember how it tastes. I'm sure once it's cooked up with a bunch of cheese and spices, it's not entirely bad. But I was kind of curious on how it would be in a soup. Still not ready to take that plunge though, I'll pick up a rotisserie and shred it up for the soup.

I used to keep a container or two of ramen soup in my desk. As an IT person I often worked odd hours - it tasted delicious compared to eating candy bars out of the vending machines.

I always have several cans of HEBs canned all white meat chunk chicken breast. I use it in chicken salad sandwiches, put it and packets of taco seasoning in a skillet for chicken tacos, it and packets of buffalo seasoning in a skillet for buffalo chicken sliders, use it in various chicken/tuna/hamburger helpers, cook mac n cheese and add a can of chicken and a drained can of peas.

We buy kirkland canned chicken and use it for chicken salad sandwiches. I've tried it in a couple casseroles and the flavor and texture were gross. I'd prefer rotisserie.

Wow, OP here. Guess this thread got dragged back up after two years. I do have to say that since my original post I have bought some canned chicken and it's not entirely bad. I had weight loss surgery this past June and chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad, etc were a big part of my diet in the beginning. I just mixed it up with some mayo, S&P, onion/garlic powder and it wasn't too bad. I now keep a can or two in my pantry just in case. I have also made a casserole with it over the last few months. While I probably won't make it again with canned chicken, it was passable and the whole gang ate it.

I buy the cans , I like it for a quick lunch every now and then. I use celery and onion in it. Works good for me. I like the certain whole chickens from the stores and some of them in the stores are gross. Safeway and Belair are good for their whole chickens cooked. I have never done Costco.

I had no idea this was an old thread until I read the OP's last post!

I also had no idea there was such a thing as a canned whole chicken...I was scared to even look it up.

I don't mind the "tuna-style" canned chicken in sandwiches or dips, though. I just rarely buy it now because DH needs to watch salt.

I also keep a can for last minute quick use. Usually enchiladas or in Alfredo sauce. I will also do a chicken salad out of it. I like the Organic Valley or Swanson.

I bought different canned chicken (chunks) since this was originally posted. I need to have some on hand in case of an emergency. Living in a high terrorist target city means we may have to shelter in place someday, so I have a box of some emergency rations of canned stuff.

I've found that the canned, low sodium chunk chicken that is Walmart's own brand, "Great Value," packed in WATER, not broth, is decent. The ones that I tried made and packed with broth I never liked :p as they are too high in salt and weird flavorings. But, the Great Value cans are somewhat neutral tasting, so I can mix them with mayo, curried mayo, put in a pasta salad dressed with olive oil & vinegar, or even toss it in with ramein noodles and the flavoring packet, and the chicken doesn't interfere with any of those flavors.

Is there any good canned chicken on the market? I will usually pick up a rotisserie and take all the meat off of it and use it in multiple different dishes (enchiladas, soups, casseroles, etc) I found a recipe for a creamy chicken noodle soup in the crockpot and it says to use either cooked chicken or canned chicken. I've never used it and wonder how it would be in a soup or casserole?

They have required canned chicken on one of those cooking contest shows something like 6 times. In 5 out of the 6 the one that got stuck with the canned chicken lost. You're far better off getting a rotisserie from the market or cooking your own and using it.

The whole canned chicken isn't bad, it works ok for chicken and dumplings and soup. I wouldn't use it for a sandwich though. Of course I don't like regular canned chicken for a sandwich either...no flavor and white meat, ick! 99% of the time we buy/use organic, which means no rotisserie chicken from anywhere, but sometimes in a pinch....

I have used Swanson chicken breast chunks for buffalo chicken dip and it's fine. For the types of dishes you want to make, I would buy and freeze several packages of the Perdue chicken shortcuts. My grocery store often has bogo on those and I stock up.

Incidentally, the rotisserie chickens in the stores have a ton of added salt and are very greasy. My doc suggested I buy my own whole chickens and just bake them because the precooked are as bad as any restaurant meals as far as fat and sodium.

I haven't made it in years, but I used to make Tuna Helper with canned chicken. It is a perfect substitute for those who don't like tuna...
