I read somewhere about taking canned cheese when we go snorkeling.
What exactly am I supposed to do, pour some in the water as I'm snorkeling?
3 more days!!!

Yeah it's used for shark repellent. When you see a shark just open the can of cheese and they will swim away especially if it's a Cabot Sharp cheddar right gang?

LMAO

This is a trick we learned quite a while back. Canned cheese will definitely make you popular with the fish! We are frequently "swarmed" with fish and it makes for some great photos. We didn't try it at CC on our last cruise and Disney may frown upon the trick. I'd ask a CM at CC if no one here on the boards can tell you they have used it there before. It's my understanding that it isn't harmful in any way. If that's not the case I'm sure someone will let us know. By the way, we find the good 'ole American cheese works the best! :teeth:

I've read studies that it also works with Barracuda and Giant Squid.

We were wondering where all the fish were when we last snorkeled at castaway cay. We kept going and found them with a group of people that had baggies (ziplock?) of crackers that they would kinda squirt out in the water and the fish came a swimming. They were very popular with the fish.

I don't think that crackers or cheese would bother the ocean ecosystem.

It's the munster cheese thats the shark repelant.:jester:

"I've read studies that it also works with Barracuda and Giant Squid."

Yes, and it also repels Giant Octopus but known to attract Mermaids. LOL

Seriously, I have read that it is NOT a good idea to feed Cheese to the fish. Here's a paragraph from an article from www.diveworld.com

"Remember that feeding fish makes them less cautious of humans, and more apt to be harmed by us, as well as more dependent on us for their food. If you can restrain yourself, please try to avoid feeding the fish. If you feel you must feed them, it's OK as long as you are feeding them natural food (like squid or other fish-parts). But feeding them cheese-whiz, bread, or hot-dogs is not only illegal, but these foods could also introduce disease that could be potentially species-destructive. "

Hot dogs???? wow!

I have just e-mailed the Cambrian Foundation, (they do research, education and preservation of the aquatic realm), to ask about the possible harmful side-effects of using canned cheese while snorkeling. I'll let everyone know what they say once they respond.

Muenster cheese attracts sharks, too, but bloody fish parts are even better and fingers are an especial delicacy. Not sure what the giant squid like though, never seen one eat. ;-).

Please do not feed the fish, even if you are trying to feed them something natural. It lowers their self defense fear of man, and some "tame" fish can and do bite. You can always tell fish that have been fed, they swarm to you and most of them have such lousy eyesight they cannot tell if it is food or your finger. If you get swarmed by fish it usually works to tuck your hands and arms behind your back, they know you are not going to feed them and leave you alone. If there are a lot of people in an area feeding the fish it makes them easy prey for not so honest divers coming after you equipped with a harpoon. The rules are (almost) the same in the water as any natural refuge, take only pictures, don't even leave footprints.

And the best part of NOT feeding the fish is getting to watch their natural behavior. I have snorkeled certain reefs enough to know which rocks are home to which pairs of butterfly fish, which parrot fish is being chased away because he is encroaching, watched an eel being mobbed by all the yellow jack, watched the beautiful turns of large schools, figured out where the tang come out of hiding when you hold still long enough for them to forget your presence, and where the locals go to skewer the "tame, tourist fed" fish.

Yeah, but that also attracts PWT, and the next thing you know you're being followed around by folks in trailer homes with plastic pink flamingos......

I see Kellogg's Corn Flakes is not on the list. We grab a small box at breakfast and put in a baggy. They love Corn Flakes too.
That shouldn't be too harmful. Not sure about the natural habbitate stuff and they will become addicted to it but could be.
Cheeze Whiz is too messy.

I didn't think Cheez Wiz was fit for human consumption. Why would we want to feed it to the pretty little fish? LOL!
