Candy for trick or treat

We're in a new house this year, so I asked a few neighbors. Most have agreed that we'll get around 400 kids. My son wanted me to hand out full-size candy bars.....uh no. At 50 cents a piece that's $200!!!

I usually give out things like whistles, bouncy balls, glow bracelets or other fun bracelets. I figure they get enough candy, so I try to find something fun.

We get about 150-200 kids.

When coupons used to be good I found a bunch of coupons for $1/2 butterfinger candy bars. Then the grocery store had a sale where they were 3/$1. That is the only year I ever handed out full size bars and I probably never will again! :)

We have trick or treat age kids. Last year I stuck a bunch of suckers in a pumpkin and asked people to take one. I think they were blow pops. The reason I chose the suckers is bc 1. They were less expensive. And 2. Allergies. I admit that I sometimes get annoyed with all the no nuts at school, store bought everything with ingredients notes(especially since I'm not aware of any kids at the school who actually have an allergy, they still allow nuts at lunch and no one sits in the nut free zone) anyway. I was reading something and I got so sad at the thought of a kid who can't eat hardly any of the candy they get trick or treating. The toys aren't usually something my kids get excited about, but who doesn't like a blow pop? We didn't have too many trick or treaters. Apparently there is a neighborhood in our small town (less than 10,000) that goes all out, free hot dogs, crazy decor. Most people end up there. We probably will this year as well. This is our second year here, I was wondering where all the kids were hiding on halloween.

I only buy 2 to 3 bags. Most of the kids that come to our house are bused in. We live at the top of a small incline and many feel it is not worth the trouble. We get less than 50 and the people farther into the neighborhood get over a hundred.

Every year fewer and fewer houses give out candy. I think that it is due to Religious reasons. Each year more and more kids are being picked up at school before the halloween party.

I buy that big UTZ jug that has the snack packs of pretzels in it. Comes with 60 individual bags. Usually our tick or treat only last 20 minutes because we have so few kids in the neighborhood. Rather than have a lot of left over candy we have pretzels we can pack in our lunch.

I buy 120 packs of fun dip and 100 full sized bars- I give the kids a choice and amazingly they usually always choose the fun dip! I only open the boxes of candy as needed because any left over I return. Some years we go through it all and others I have left over. Last year was light but this year since its on a Friday night the kids will be out longer trick or treating. Next year I will have to stock up majorly since it is on a Saturday that means they start coming at noon straight though the evening.

I always remember as a kid when Halloween would fall on Saturday and sunday- man did we love it, we would be out all day and evening trick or treating, just stopping home to unload and then get right back out there!

When we lived in a neighborhood (currently just a culdesac... Developing neighborhood). I handed out soda/water and yoohoos! ( blow pops for the babies)!! Everyone loved a cold
Drink during their trick or treating!

We had about 100 or so... Just stocked up when they went on sale :-)

I buy one of the 20-bar packages of full size candy bars for around $10 and that seems to be enough. If I run out (hasn't happened yet), the late comers will get granola bars or fruit snack packs that I buy for my kid's school lunch snacks.

You don't have set hours? Even in the neighborhoods outside of town everyone follows the closest town's hours (almost always 6-8.)

No set hours where I live. I've had trick or treaters come until about 11pm

I used to always buy full size bars. The last couple of years everyone knows this and I have been getting repeat teens and adults (!) who then ask for 1 for their baby!! no good deed goes unpunished.

So this year it's minis. If you buy them at Sam's, you can return unopened bags.

I buy one bag. We very seldom get more than 8 or 10 kids. Our street doesn't lead into and isn't in a neighborhood so the kids tend to skip it.

noooo- 6-8 is only 2 hours!! Our kids come home from school, throw their costumes on and hit the road getting in as much fun as they can until night time- usually by 9 they stop coming around. We also don't have lights on or lights off stuff- every house gets knocked on. Most people here have sensor lights that light up only when someone steps up on the front walk so they don't stay on.

I used to live in a larger building and would buy 10-12 bags of candy to give out. Now I only have to buy 3 bags (I could even buy 2 but I get nervous about running out).

Same here. I give out play doh. The kids live it, even the older kids. I try to buy it the year before, after Halloween, when it's on clearance. And if I don't give it all out, it will save for the following year.

We have set hours also, 6-8 pm. So the 400 kids, now down to the upper 200's, have to all arrive in that short window!

A previous town had no restrictions, and so it could take up most of a day, especially if it fell on a weekend.

I have a number of adults asking for the full size bars or taking one for a babe in arms too! One year I actually bought a package of teething biscuits to give to those adults trying to claim they were trick or treating for their infant. I also find some kids trying to come back for a second or third time!

Ours is the street that gets all the trick or treaters as well. I would say I spend maybe $60 or $70? And that's not expensive candy. Last year wasn't nearly as many but the weather was bad.

This post just made me wonder what the heck to do with the dog this year. Last year he was a puppy and I had to launch myself over the baby gate every time the doorbell rang:rotfl2:. No baby gates anymore, but I might put one back up because he's a lab and thinks everyone is his friend. I'll be trying to pull him away from the door all night.:headache:

My husband and I just sit on the porch because the dogs go crazy whenever some one knocks on the door.

Our town does 6-8 and you only go to houses that have their light on. We have sensor lights on our house but we can turn that option off. Kids can "hit" plenty of houses in 2 hours. ::yes::
