Hi!

My husband and I are going to the World in September and I have decided (in my infinite wisdom LOL) that I want candy from around the world showcase. Can anyone give me some specific candy from each country that is the best? Name and descriptions if at all possible please :)

Thanks so much!

We always get gummy candy in Germany and Japan...maybe a few pieces of chocolate in Italy but you can buy that anywhere and England has chocolate but we can buy that at our local Publix....

China has a candy called White Rabbit - it's sort of like a vanilla taffy. The inner wrapper is made of rice paper and is totally edible.

this is fun! One trip i went with friends in December and brought home chocolate from all the countries for a xmas present for hubby

It was a lotf if fun, just wandered into each store and checked out the chocolate options., (Lots of fun on xmas xay when he opend each one....and yes he shares :D)

I remember in Germany found a huge nonpareil. this thing was HUGE! Italy was great too, lots if options. Surprisingly, France choice was the worst.

Have a great time :thumbsup2

This is a VERY cool idea!!! I am excited to see all of the responses to your thread...Thanks:thumbsup2

I wanted to jump on this thread.

We were there in June and I wanted to do chocolate around--it was so hot that chocolate did not appeal to me. I was so disappointed to leave w/o trying the chocolate. My husband surprised me with a trip in Dec--so I will have a second chance to try chocolate around the world. :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for all the ideas! I think I am going to have a TON of fun doing this! Keep em comin!

the canadian pavillion sells coffee crisp bars and i believe maple candy....or i may be imagining that one! lol

i think the uk pavillion sells all cadbury chocolates/bars.

Ask the CMs in the store what candy they prefer from their homeland. That's what I did.

My son and I love the hard candies they have in Japan. They are different fruit flavors and very yummy! I am so sorry that I don't remember the name, though!

If they have it, try the Aero bars in the Canadian Pavillion. Speaking as a proud Canuk, Aero rules!!!:goodvibes

-Haribo Gummy Bears - Germany (the original bears in the gold package) - it's a must have item for us.
-If you like original old-fashioned salty licorice, Germany also has the good stuff.
- Dairy Milk Chocolate Drops (or bar) in UK

I think this is such a great idea. I read in a trip report *sorry I can't remember which one as I have read so many* about getting treats from around the world for an evening snack while watching Illuminations.. I thought this would be a great idea as long as they didnt melt..

This is coming from an Italian girl....

In Italy buy some Baci! Excellent chocolate!! That is if you like nuts or don't have any nut allergies. Then it's not good. If you have no problems, buy it!! So good!

These are such great ideas for candies. Thanks so much! I never thought I would get such a response for candy! I guess there are more sweet tooths than I thought! :rotfl2:

Now why didn't I think of chocolate around the world...great idea!! I will have to try it in August:) Thanks!!!

Another vote for the hard candies in Japan! :D We also enjoy this soft strawberry candy in Japan, and of course the rice candy! :D (It's all good, who am I kidding??)

I would recommend the Turkish Delight in the UK. I have always heard about this candy (Narnia books), but never knew what it was. It is good....like a chocolate covered jelly bar...yummy!!!

China has a candy called White Rabbit - it's sort of like a vanilla taffy. The inner wrapper is made of rice paper and is totally edible.

You probably won't be able to find the White Rabbit. Several months ago, there were some milk suppliers in China who were purposely thinning out their milk before passing it along to manufacturers. What they were thinning it out with happened to be poison (melamine). A good portion of the milk went into baby formula. Many babies got sick, some died, and all milk products in/from China were recalled. White Rabbit is milk candy. :sad1:

I celebrate Chinese New Year with my 8th grade students, and I go to asianfoodgrocer.com to buy Asian candies and snacks to let them try. In 2008, the White Rabbit was so popular the kids would bring me money to order the candies for them. My students this year were so upset that I couldn't order it for them, but I don't think they were disappointed with what they wound up getting instead. I still have not been able to find the candy, almost a year later.

Here is one article about it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7624969.stm (BBC dated September 2008). There were 3 people involved (I think). I remember that the woman involved got the death penalty. Google "China Milk" and you should find a lot about it, if you're interested.

All that said, Japan does have a few milk-based candies that are comparable, but none quite as good as White Rabbit, nor do they come in as many interesting flavors as White Rabbit did.
