For the last several years, we have gone to WDW in the first or second week of December. I personally find the CP dinner packages to be incredibly overpriced, so we don't do the package. Unless you absolutely have to see one of the very popular narrators, like Whoopi Goldberg or Neil Patrick Harris, and unless you can only go on the weekend, you should have little trouble getting in standby on a weeknight. I usually pick a weeknight when the narrator is less well known, and I don't even stand in line. I just wait til they've let everyone in, and then go in the back and find a seat. I've almost always been successful this way. And even if you can't get in, you can stand in the back, as noted, or you can sit outside by the American Adventure and hear everything very clearly (there isn't that much to see, anyway). If it's very important to you to be guaranteed a seat, then by all means do the dinner package. I'm just saying that it isn't always necessary if you have a little flexibility about what night you attend.
