Hello! I remember back in my DISboards heyday, there used to be posts about viewing Candlelight. I’ve watched it five times, but always as a walk up. This year, I have three family members singing in the choir, so I decided this was the year to try the “all-day campout,” and I figured I’d do a post!

Each year, the procedures vary a bit, so my experience may not match future years. I decided I’d come early and give it a shot, but I was very aware I might be unsuccessful.

I arrived at the parking structure at 6:32, and there were already quite a few cars! I got through the parking booth at 7:05, was on the escalator down at 7:11, and was on a tram at 7:15. (For the record, I considered parking at GardenWalk, which I think is open earlier, or Ubering over, knowing the structure would put me “behind,” but I didn’t want to spend money not knowing if this plan would work. I have Inspire, so I don’t pay for the structure.)

When I hit the esplanade, I thought my dream was over. Some “campers” I’d talked to last year said you had to be “near the front” to get a curb, and clearly, I was not that. But I picked a line I knew would split behind a tree, and I decided to check it out.

They started letting people in just after 7:20, and I got in at 7:28. Luckily for me, they changed procedures a bit from last year, and rather than ONLY allowing one row on the physical curb, they had blocked off a little section with a rope. (They also had no seating on the City Hall side, which is different, and I hear there are some benches or chairs or something on the other side of the tree, but apparently less than usual.)

Here is my little spot! The whole section was full within minutes of my arrival here.

A few notes from the people around me (many of whom do this every year):
- If you want to be “first,” you get dropped off by someone at about 6 so you’re the start of the security line.
- They are very pleased by the rope behind us and seem to think this will keep us from being “squashed” during the show. I think they will clearly take down this rope when we all stand, so while it’s very nice for this “camp out” waiting time, I don’t assume it will change the viewing experience.
- I am here solo, but several people around me have assured me they will protect my stuff if I run for food or a bathroom break. I had brought a lot of snacks just in case I couldn’t leave. 😂

You snagged a great spot!! How lucky, especially considering you were a little “behind” the Candlelight experts getting dropped off at 6am 😆.

I am really excited for you! I’ve always wanted to try to see this!

Do you know who the narrator will be ?
No, they usually do a sound check around 4:00-4:30, and we should know then!

They are telling people that there is almost no standby viewing this year. According to CMs currently, our little roped section is the only standby viewing on this side. I’m not sure this is true - CMs are notoriously misinformed about Candlelight procedure - but it has guests STRESSED. Whenever they have us stand up, I think it’s going to be wild.

So how did it go??? Did you find it worth your all-day campout?

Haha, sorry guys, when it got crowded I completely lost functioning internet, and then I was in the park until midnight with my sister. (The choir people can stay after!) I then spent Sunday at Universal Studios because I am apparently a poor decision maker. 😂

I’ll share my experience first, and then I’ll share what else I observed for posterity.

ANYWAY, I was wrong about them taking down the rope behind us - our section was indeed the only viewing on that curb in front of the Opera House. This is different than previous years - I’ve often watched from under the tree there, so I had figured they’d open that whole area up and people would be behind us, but that did not happen - they basically doubled the “walkway” area behind us instead of using half for viewing. The CMs were pretty protective of the people who’d been in there all day and told people poking around that it was full. In fact, they really never made us let any additional people into the section.

Around 11/12, several clusters of people showed up and appeared to be ready to “camp out” and were shocked that they were too late. I, and several of the people around me, did squish in and let some couples in around us when possible. After that, no one else really joined us, so we had a nice amount of room and were able to stay seated until the show started.

The sound check was at 4:30. News broke online that it was Benjamin Bratt (who was in Andor this year and was Ernesto in Coco), and then he came out about 10 minutes later.

Shortly before the show, they started filling in empty chairs. (There were dozens.) They ended up coming to our group and offering us the chairs right in front of where we were standing. I wanted photos, which meant standing on the curb was better, but most of the people I’d waited with all day ended up with seats. I did get a perfect curb spot with no one in front of me at all to watch from.

Our area then filled in with other people - I’m not sure where they came from, but quite a few people ended up with a last-minute great view! One man with his two daughters were next to me, and the mom was in the choir, so it’s nice that they got to see it.

Candlelight was as glorious as always, and I had a great view of all three of my family members! Luckily they were on the narrator side, so no one was behind a tree! The great view was worth all the time since I was specifically trying to see and photograph them.

(They’re all in this shot! I got lots of close-ups of all three, too.)

When the first show was done, they cleared out the whole section and I walked up Main Street and saw everyone waiting for the second show. They had CMs in the back of the lines telling people it was full.

I did some shopping during the first show and then mobile ordered at Refreshment Corner so I’d have somewhere to sit and watch the second procession down Main Street. They don’t really let you stand anywhere on Main Street, so this was the best viewing I could come up with. Several others had the same idea!

During the second show, they kept Main Street pretty blocked off and had lots of one-way traffic happening. I crossed over halfway down to get to Tomorrowland and snapped a picture:

As far as I’m concerned, it went perfectly for me - better than I expected! I don’t think I’d give up a prime weekend day in December to do this frequently, but getting to see my family perform was special, and I’m glad I got so lucky with a great spot to watch from!

I edited the above post with my experience, but here are some other notes.

There was one other section where people were “camped out” all day. I believe these spots go first. I walked by a little after noon to stretch my legs, and it looked like this:
IMG_7799.jpeg

The picture below is from 4:00. The white circled area is some kind of wheelchair viewing. A CM mentioned “those people were lined up at 8am to get their tickets for that spot.” I do not know where they were lined up or any other details about that.

The red circled area was the main “standby” viewing. They didn’t have any on the curb in front of City Hall, and as I mentioned, our section was much smaller than in past years. So, while there was still decent standby viewing, it was smaller than it has been.

Of course, they change things every year, so this may be irrelevant in the future, but maybe it will be helpful for someone!

Feel free to ask if you have any questions! I’m not online here often, but I’m sure I will be here sometime before next December to answer them. 😂

My overall tips from five years of watching standby and one year of “camping out” would be these:

If you want to try to see Candlelight, bring your patience and flexibility. Realize there’s not a set procedure you can 100% rely on. Be very nice to the CMs. You have to go in knowing it might not work out, and that has to be ok! But if you want to see it, I’d definitely try it!

If I was going to try to camp out again, I’d be at security by 6:30, so I wouldn’t be able to park at the structure. (Someone told me Toy Story opened at 6:30, for the record.)

If I was going to try to walk up in the future, I’d ask CMs for their best idea about how it’s working when I got into the park, but I’d also just be lurking around by the first parade, or I’d plan to wait on Main Street for the second viewing.

Thanks for the pictures and the summary. Is the processional only for the first show and then everyone stays in place for the second show? Or do the performers leave and enter again? I've been there during the day of the Candlelight Processional but never stayed for the performance. I didn't realize they blocked off Main Street like that. Is there a reason?
