If we make an ADR for a restaurant, and later decide we don't want the reservation, how much in advance do we need to cancel it? (it's not CRT or anything like that.)

As soon as you know that you're not going to be using it. There's no penalty for cancelling or not cancelling (unless it is CRT and I think maybe California Grill has a $20 penalty or something like that), but it's the appropriate thing to do to call and cancel as soon as you know for sure, even if it's right before the meal.

Out of consideration for others who might want the reservation, please cancel as soon as you know that you will not be using the reservation, whether that is 6 weeks, 6 days or 6 hours. :goodvibes (This is assuming that you are talking about a reservation that does not have a credit card guarantee.....)

To you personally- there is no penalty or NEED to cancel by a certain date.
But, canceling asap will allow somebody else looking for a reservation to take yours! :thumbsup2

OH , of course, I was just wondering if there was a penalty for canceling or what not. I haven't made any big reservations, just T Rex and Whispering Canyon so far, debating Akershus. We're only doing a few Table Services my kids don't like to sit around a lot.

If you're on the fence with Whispering Canyon- have you ever been there? I've gone with kids age 3 through 20, and everywhere in between- and they really enjoyed it! I've never been to Trex or Akershus, but have been to several TS with kids.
Besides all the character meals, they also love Whispering Canyon, 50s primetime, and Sci Fi.

Heh..we've only been to disney world once, and that was ten years ago before any kids (it was our honeymoon) We went to Sci Fi when we were there before and really enjoyed it. My 4 year old is Dinosaur crazy, so that's why T-rex is on the list (thruthfully, so am I. LOL), my six year old daughter wants to eat with princesses, but then she doesn't, she goes back and forth so we don't know about Akershus yet because she is 'iffy' on the whole thing. My Husband and I are looking forward to Whispering Canyon, it's the type of food we like, and we think the kids will like the sillyness (anywhere that being antsy and loud is not a problem. LOL)
thanks for the reccomendation :)

As soon as you know for sure cancel.

As others have said even if it is an hour before hand it does give someone else the chance to eat there and may make their day.

If you are in the parks and decide you’re not up for a meal walk into guest services and cancel. I did this a few times on my recent trip and they were very appreciative.

Most people do not make the effort.

Akershus has a two day cancellation deadline.

In past trips, I have had difficulty cancelling reservations (not talking about Akershus... just regular ADRs) the day-of the visit. However, what I noted last week is that the folks at each restaurant seem to be receptive to cancelling reservations now, such as when we decided to do an early walk-in at Yak & Yeti, when we had a later reservation there. What I'm still not sure is how to get them to cancel a (later) reservation at some other restaurant. What I do is write each confirmation number (plus restaurant, time and our name) on a slip of paper (from the notepad provided by the phone in the hotel room). In the one case that "worked", I just handed the CM checking folks in the slip and asked her to cancel the reservation. I would hope that it wouldn't matter that it wasn't for the same restaurant, but I don't know.

Does Akershus require a credit card to reserve? If not, there's no way they could enforce a two day cancellation requirement because they would have no way to charge you.

I've never had a problem cancelling reservations. I just called the dining number and tell them I want to cancel a ressie and then give them the confirmation number. I've done this even a few hours before the meal.

Making reservations at Akershus does require a credit card.

I've never been able to get through to dining reservations in a timely manner while at the park. I always end up on hold and end up losing connection due to going into an attraction before being serviced.

We usually try to call from the room that morning or evening and it has never taken more than 10 minutes before I was helped. I can see how it would frustrating to try and call from the parks. You might try stopping by guest services and giving them the confirmation number so that they can cancel it for you. I know they can help you find a reservation, so they should be able to cancel one too. Hope this helps!

We'll probably know within the first day or two if the kids are not wanting sit down dinners, my oldest son is getting crabby and telling me that no way will he sit through the princess Dinner for his sister (He'll be 9 when we go his sister 6) Wonderful. LOL.

I did try the "give the confirmation number to a restaurant check-in CM if you need to cancel" trick a couple of years ago, and they had no clue about how to do it from where they were, they simply told me not to worry. I'll surely drop it off at Guest Services if we pass by it next time.
