Cancelling cable questions

Hey all,

So, I'm starting to take the first step to cancelling cable - which is convincing myself I can live without it, lol!

I'm pretty sure I can live without, but I have become completely dependant on my DVR! I'm not sure I can live without it.

I have a Blu-Ray player that I can do Netflix through, and when I cancel cable I'll get the box so I can watch "regular" channels (which will keep Curious George for DH). But I'm worried about him missing his Disney shows.

Anyway, is there a DVR that I can get that I don't have to pay a subscription fee for?

(Building one from a computer is an option if someone has any good experience with it and if the exDH will take pity on me).

Congratulations!

Disney Junior has a few full length episodes online.

At one point you could purchase a Tivo box and pay a lifetime subscription fee and DVR to your heart's content but I don't know if that is still available. I am sure someone more technical can provide a link or instructions on how to build your own.

I thought my DS4 would be upset when we cancelled cable, but he took it in stride and didn't really care.

Good luck and enjoy your newfound freedom!

I'm trying to talk my DH into cancelling our cable as well. We have a digital antenna thingy ($20 at Walmart) and through that we get about 10 channels, including all local channels and a few extras. We still get KET as well. All of the TV shows I like, I watch online either through Netflix ($15 a month) or sites like HULU. I do DVR stuff, but most of it is already available online. What's the point? My girls have a ZILLION DVD's so it's not like they'd be hurting for cartoons. All the movies on our movie channels (STARS and something else we have) are all on Netflix. There are a few shows I like but can live without (HGTV and stuff like that). The only reason we have cable is because DH must watch the car races. Unfortunatlely, the channel that it comes on is only available on one of the pricier packages. Ugh!

Anyhoo, cable is overrated. You can get the same stuff online and most libraries have DVD's you can check out for free. Count up the money you will save and put it towards your vacation fund! ;)

buy them from itunes... this is what i did it's 2$ per episode... how much do you spend on cable? i was spending 70 ish a month... that is 35 kids shows on itunes for just one month of cable and sometimes more since you will have netflix you will have dora and diego and such so thats negligable, but this was the best i found that was legitimate for the disney shows there are some hong kong sellers that sell large sets of mickey moues club house for super cheap but it's boot leg so i prefer the itunes route also then i have them for my ipad and what not.. and if you get an apple tv you can stream them right to your tv through your computer... the one show I HAVE to watch i also buy on itunes so i can get my fix i have spent maybe (in 8 months of no cable) 90$ on my show (which was about 35$ for a "season pass") and lots of shows for her. and then they are on my iphone her ipod and my ipad so we have them super portable! love it.
