After going round and round for months with the organization we signed up to do our GAD with, I cancelled our intents to volunteer last night. I was fed up with them. We were supposed to volunteer this Saturday. The last straw was when the organization told me that we were required to complete 8 hours and that time would be 10am-6pm with no break. I have 14 & 9 year old DSS's that were volunteering with us. I can't see them working all day without a break. They also said we needed to bring water and snacks for the volunteers. Um....I thought I was a volunteer?!?! :confused3

So DH and I talked about it and after a call to Disney to find out how much it would be to add a days worth of tickets to our package ($15.98 total), we decided to cancel. I just don't think the outcome would have been good for anyone.

Now I feel a little guilty about cancelling and leaving them without 4 volunteers to help set up their rummage sale. DH says to send them a check with a small monetary donation and move on.

I don't see how they can tell you to work that long without a break. if you were an employee that would be illegal.:confused3

you are a very nice person to still be making a donation to their organization.:)

Personally I don't think you need to feel guilty about cancelling. Tell them why. They need to realize people won't put up for that.

As the PP pointed out, it's illegal to make paid employees work that many hours with a break. I'm darn sure they are not allowed to tell volunteers no break. Frankly, I'd be very surprised if they didn't have more volunteers cancel for the same reason, or walk-out when told no breaks, or argue or just take a break anyway.

Not to split hairs, but the GAD voucher is worth much more than that. If you don't have tickets, you can apply the value of the one day to a multi day ticket which is about $80 per ticket. If you have a package aleady, you can save your one day package ticket for a future trip applying it the same way (again with about $80 per person) or if you don't plan on going again, you can use your GAD voucher for the fastpass option which dependending on when you go, could be worth it's weight in gold. You would never use the GAD voucher to add a day to an existing multi day ticket.

Well, we are working a rummage sale this Sat. and our organization has been more than generous. We even have choices of baking 4 dozen cookies to donate instead of working the event. That is too bad the organization you chose feels the need to be so demanding.
