Cancellations/Closings?

Are you seeing more things closing again in your area? I am in NE Ohio and there have been a few things that cancelled recently. We went to see Wicked in Cleveland on Sunday, then yesterday it was announced that the shows for Monday and Tuesday would be cancelled. I'm glad we got to see it!

We have tickets for Billy Joel at MSG in Jan., but I fear it will be postponed AGAIN. We bought these 2 years ago, original date was May 2020, changed 3 times, and now I'm not feeling good about this date either. I just don't want to find out last minute! We are driving, so we don't have flights to worry about, but would need to cancel hotel a few days in advance to avoid a charge.

Yep. I'm in the Washington, DC / Baltimore, MD suburbs. Things are starting to get weird.

We went to the Warner Theatre on Sunday to see the Washington Ballet do The Nutcracker. It's almost a family tradition. We've been several times over the years. But it's been a few years since we last went.

Before kids, DH and I went to several Salute to Vienna shows (it's an Austrian New Years Day thing). DH and I were talking about getting tickets for it. The kids really enjoyed the ballet. They behaved, it went a lot better than I expected actually. DS12 is in the school band, DD9 starts band next month. Exposure to music and the arts is very important to us, etc.

Anyway, I go to buy tickets for Salute to Vienna at the Strathmore in the MD surburbs, and nope. Show canceled. Travel restrictions are affecting the cast. I guess they can't get here from Europe or something. And I see other shows at the venue are canceled because of the artists getting sick.

Yes. An ATL Hawks game was canceled due to Covid concerns. I went to the mall yesterday and they're back to counting how many people can be in the store at one time, have to line up outside.

Lots of Broadway shows are closing right now. It's crazy. I have a weekend trip planned in January to see a couple shows, but we will see what happens. I'm not convinced they will be playing.

I'm in South Florida - I WISH more things were closing and I wish people were taking things more seriously. I teach high school and my kids are dropping like flies...

ETA - just remembered ONE closure in my area. Our local train was doing a Polar Express ride; we had tickets. They cancelled. I was grateful they did as their cast/crew had some positive cases.

We were planning on going tomorrow to see Spiderman, but when we looked at the amount of tickets that were already sold vs the amount for today, we decided to go today. I have no desire to go to a crowded movie theater right now!

How is DC otherwise? We are planning to go over New Years to do some of the museums. We specifically picked DC due to lots to see outside, lots of outdoor dining with winterized patios, and their enforced mask mandate (we also went over the summer). We are 2 boostered adults and a vaccinated 8 year old. I know numbers are getting hit, but we live in a state that has passed laws prohibiting COVID protocols (not debating). But if they are going to shut down a lot then maybe we should wait.

A number of restaurants in DC are closing temporarily - no indoor, no outdoor, just closing. Some are doing takeout. Not a lot of them yet, but possibly more. There is a Starbuck's just down from my work, as of yesterday it is completely closed, no announcement, nobody knows why. Smithsonian has not announced anything (yet)

DC schools have begun returning to virtual learning.

the DC mayor actually ended the indoor mask mandate a month ago. She reinstated it as of today.

Everything by us is totally normal. Just had brunch in a packed restaurant with no masks in sight. I don’t get freaked out over covid, but it was closer quarters than I would have liked.

Haven't seen much being cancelled yet.
We are once again required to wear masks indoors or if a company rather they can require proof of vaccination and then masks do not have to be worn.
There are still lots of NYE celebrations set to take place too.

My county never lifted the mask mandate so when California put it back in effect it had no impact here. I have had to show proof of vaccination (or a covid test) to go to a a holiday party, and to eat in at one restaurant, but I'm not sure there is a mandate attached to that, or just a choice made by those in charge. While California "reopened" June 15th, social distancing and masks never changed.
I guess the Mayor of New York has said a decision will be made by Christmas as to whether the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration will be canceled. Forget the pandemic, that is the LAST place I would want to be on New Year's Eve.

NE Ohio here and yes, we are seeing quite a few closures. A lot of the small businesses I frequent are closing for a day here or there to do a deep clean and some are just closing through Christmas. A few daycare centers are closing early for Christmas due to teachers being exposed. Playhouse Square as previously mentioned has closed down some shows. I also know of a few venues that are cancelling large gatherings through the holidays. A funeral dinner, that we were skipping due to COVID, was cancelled by the venue because they are only allowing parties of 8 or less.

I think we will see more through the new year since cases are really high here.

Central Kentucky here and so far not really noticing anything closed or mandates changing. We have had to mask at work since the pandemic started, and that is still in place.

I am in British Columbia Canada and they just announced over the weekend the the touring production of Anastasia to Vancouver is prosponed. I was so close as I had tickets for next month. All venues with more than 1000 are now to operate at 50% So most entertainment and sports events are being cancelled or posponed. All New Years Eve events all cancelled.

More restriction are been announced this afternoon . So we are expecting more closures.

We also live in South Florida. DS takes lessons & volunteers at a comedy club here. About a week ago one of the managers tested positive, which I didn't know about. (I also didn't know the GM & a couple other employees refuse to wear a mask, until now.) They have now had three more people test positive. The club has been shut down, but not before ruining Christmas plans for many of us. Yes, I'm very unhappy with my DS at the moment.

DH and I are vaxxed and boosted, DS12 and DD9 are fully vaxxed too. Our county has a mask mandate, so things never really got looser for us except for a couple of weeks in the summer.

My experience in DC on Sunday was a lot like every other experience there since late Spring. Regardless of the mask mandate being lifted for the last few weeks, most people were still wearing them indoors (and yes, now it's reinstated again). The show was masks required and proof of vax or recent test. Nearly full show. We had a nice dinner at Cuba Libre and things were hopping but not crazy stuffed either. We walked down to the National Christmas tree after dinner. Very busy there, but that's not unusual either.

Early December/late November, we'd been going down to the Smithsonian museums and doing all of that stuff. All I can say is the museums weren't dead, but they weren't packed either. And oh man I hate security lines, the security lines were bad. But then I'm going to tell you to go visit my favorite little hole in the wall - Mozart Cafe. They need your business. Great German/Austrian good, nice staff, weird little grocery store in the front. The chicken schnitzel is divine. Or just be a tourist and go to Fogo de Chao or Jaleo....

I can't predict what's going to happen over the next week in the DC area, but I'm a boss with 100+ employees, the company we work for has a vax mandate with 98% compliance. More than 10 of my staff have tested positive or gone into quarantine since Friday. I've had to shut down the offices and send everyone home to telework.

I haven't noticed any closures here but going back to online pickups more often or shopping at really off hours. At the grocery store at 10:30 pm, about 1/2 of the 10 people I saw were masked. That is typical around here where we are in NC.

Locals excepting the youngers NEVER celebrate NYE in Times Square, pandemic or not. I did it once after working in the area and rarely admit it to others; a true day of the locusts moment
