I was able to find rooms available for dh and I to go for 4 nights between Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, we have some family things that may or may not affect the trip. I hate to not book and miss it if these issues don't actually play out. However, if we do need to cancel, what is the penalty? I think I remember it being something along the lines of those points then not being able to be banked. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Are you talking about reserving a DVC villa on your DVC points?

If so, if you cancel within 31 days of your arrival date the points will go into "holding account" -- which means they can only be used to book reservations within 60 days of arrival.

Yes, looking into a DVC villa, studio this time. So, could I even cancel at a few days out if need be? Thx

Also, I believe points in holding account cannot be banked, as you mentioned.

If you cancel prior to 31 days, the points would go back into your account and would still be bankable if you are within your banking deadline.

This is all assuming you are reserving a DVC villa with your own DVC points. If you are using DVC points for non-DVC accommodations, that's a very different story no matter when you cancel.

Yes, you can cancel up to the day before your scheduled arrival. On the day of your arrival, all points are forfeited whether you show up to check in or not.

But from 31-1 day in advance, the points go into holding and can only be used for reservations made 60 days or less prior to arrival. That's a big problem for some; not such a big deal for others -- and it also depends somewhat on how much time you have in your use year to use the points under those restrictions.

Also points in Holding can not be banked or borrowed.

And must be used to complete travel by the end of the Use Year or they expire.

The worst thing about putting points into Holding it has gotten almost impossible to find anything available to book at 60 days or less.

For me personally it would have to be a last minute emergency situation to make me put points in holding.

Well, it would be a last minute emergency thing unfortunately but I hate to give up the chance for a trip at the holidays for something that may or may not happen. I am able to get this resize at under 60 days for right after thanksgiving so I feel o taking the chance.

My other thought is that if we can't go I could offer it to my parents who live a couple hours from WDW or a friend.

As someone who generally has points in holding and tends to book late. I have not had this experience. You do have to be VERY flexible as to resort and accomodation size, but.... I can generally get something at SSR or OKW. (And I like both of them so it's not a big deal)
